About this listen

Her heart can't be destroyed by the same person twice. At least, that's what Clara Abbot finds herself hoping when she runs into Boone Cavanaugh less than an hour after returning to Charleston.

As kids, Clara and Boone had been each other's firsts, and no one or nothing could stand in the way of their forever. But all kids have to grow up sometime. The troubled son of the town drunk winding up with the firstborn daughter of the local royalty was a happy ending even the most imaginative of fairy tales couldn't make believable.

Their fable came to an end as most do: tragically. Boone might have done the leaving, but it was Clara who got away and made a new life for herself in California. But after seven years of dodging her hometown, she's only back in Charleston for seven days to celebrate her sister's wedding. She won't let her overbearing family or her run-in with Boone rattle her - though rattling her is obviously Boone's primary objective.

Boone is her past and her past is behind her, a mere speck in the rearview. So why does she feel it coming back every time she looks at him? Why does she see it every time he looks back?

Just when Clara's life can't possibly get more complicated, the ground shifts, and she discovers just how far her family was willing to go to keep the wrong boy out of her life. Was it really Boone who left her? Or was it Clara who left him?

The truth will be hard to face. Especially when she discovers most of her life has been built on lies.

Magnificent Second Chance Romance

If you could sum up The Fable of Us in three words, what would they be?

Beautifully written lovestory.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Boone was my favorite, Clara was a close second. I choose Boone because of his integrity. I appreciated his selflessness. He didn't have much but what he did have he was committed to using those resources to improve his community. I loved that even when things were thought to be wrong that he didn't give up. He was willing to sacrifice his pride to provide for the woman that he loved. I loved that he was there for her, not leaving her alone with her complicated family. I can go on and on about this guy....

Which character – as performed by AJ Ferraro – was your favorite?

Clara of course. I loved how AJ Ferraro performed this character. Her voice modulation was spot on. You could literally tell every emotion Clara was feeling at any given time. She did wonderful!

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

There were many moments but I would have to say that it was when Clara and Boone sat down and talked everything through towards the end of the book.

Any additional comments?

I would definitely recommend this Audiobook. Aj Ferraro did amazing and I can not wait to discover other books that she narrated.

absolutely loved this book!

Clara and Boone, from opposite sides of the tracks, were lovers as teenagers. Then, at 18, were torn apart by what seems like betrayals. Seven years later, Clara returns to town for her sisters wedding, only to find Boone and offer him a deal he can't refuse.

Boone ::sighh:: How perfect is he? I absolutely loved him, he was broody, sweet, caring, and intense. And he had a ponytail!

Clara... While I liked her, I felt like she didn't have enough backbone. There's so much she put up with and didn't do much about it.

The story, I absolutely loved it! I love second chance romances, and I loved their second chance. It was a beautiful story with just the right amount of drama in it. It's definitely one of my favorite Nicole Williams books!

The narrator, I liked her a lot! Perfect for the voice of Clara!

Second chance love

I listened to the audio version of this story and I think it is a completely different reading experience than looking at words on a page, especially when the narrator is able to inject so much emotion into their voice and of course the southern accents.

Clara and Boone were in love as teenagers but it was the classic ‘wrong side of the tracks’ romance story. She came from a family of wealth and influence. He came from a family with nothing. The one thing they did have in common was how much they loved and cared for each other.

Their relationship ended when they had to deal with something that completely blind sided them and her family jumped at the opportunity to interfere and get rid of Boone from Clara’s life. Needless to say it worked.

Now Clara is returning home for her sister’s wedding, she is marrying Ford, the man Clara was dating until she caught him having sex with her sister. In retrospect she really did dodge a bullet, she can’t imagine being shackled to a man like him as a husband.

After a chance meeting with Boone when she arrives in town to stay with her family, she convinces him to play the part of her boyfriend, her ‘plus one’ for the wedding.

As you can imagine, her family is not very happy about having Boone in their company once again. Secrets that were buried are starting to break through the surface and Clara & Boone realise there was more to their break up than they knew.

I loved this second chance love story.

A great performance for a compelling story

What did you love best about The Fable of Us?

I loved a great second chance story handled well. And this is an excellent example of that. I loved the connection that Boone and Clara had, even after 7 years of separation and heartbreak. Their families only give them stress and grief, in general and about each other.

What did you like best about this story?

The relationship between Boone and Clara. I loved how they had each others back with the situations that came up during the story. And how they were able to untangle their past into something manageable.

What about AJ Ferraro’s performance did you like?

I loved the narrator. She did an excellent job at differentiating between the different characters enough for me that I usually had no problem knowing who was speaking. I thought she did an excellent job. This was my first ever audio book because I never thought my mind would be able to pay attention and focus. However, I had no problem focusing on the story.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I wanted to, yes. I wasn't able no, but I really did want to. In fact, I only had 50 minutes to go and had to go inside, so I bought the ebook to finish the story at night. And THEN listened to the rest of the book just to hear how it sounded.

Any additional comments?

I am a huge Nicole Williams fan. I love her writing and I think she is very talented. Anything I have read by her has been amazing.

This story had such potential.

The premise was a great second chance story but the h was such a such a wimp. If she didn't stand up for herself she could at least have stood up for her man. The bride to be should have had cake smashed in here face at the bachelorette party but no.... aaarrgggg!!!!! The most she did was refuse too have her picture taken with the family??? So frustrating for the reader, give the girl a backbone and the reader some satisfaction to right the wrongs!

A Spoiled Southern Atrocity

I am sure plenty of lives have suffered from family discrimination and in thinking that they know what is best for their children. What killed me about this story is the lack of atonement, accountability and if nothing else anger Claire should have towards her family for what they have done. She didn't just take the high road...she swept the road off the map and just let things go. That just assured that the parties in the wrong get away with their meddling and basically depriving Boone and Claire 7 years of their lives together.
