Publisher's summary
An original and terrifying mystery by noir writer Fredric Brown.
Once upon a time, a girl named Jenny Ames was murdered in a lonely house. No one knew where she had come from, or why she had died, or who killed her. Years later, a man moved into the same house - and discovered that nothing is more seductive than an unsolved murder.
The Far Cry is another top Fredric Brown job - a most adroit, inventive, and utterly horrifying mystery.

Imagine… Ghosts, gods, and devils - heavens and hells - cities in the sky and cities beneath the sea. Time machines, spaceships - certainly you can imagine Martians, but what about interplanetary vampires? Or a mouse that isn't a mouse? Honeymoon in Hell proves that Fredric Brown has a special vision, a sight beyond our wildest nightmares, a perception of things we couldn't even begin to imagine.

Story
The great revival of interest in Patricia Highsmith continues with the publication of a novel that will give dog owners nightmares for years to come. With an eerie simplicity of style, Highsmith turns our next-door neighbors into sadistic psychopaths, lying in wait among white picket fences and manicured lawns. In A Dog's Ransom, Highsmith blends savage humor with brilliant social satire in this dark tale of a high-minded criminal who hits a wealthy Manhattan couple where it hurts the most.

Story
Charles Willeford was a man of letters in all senses of the word. Poet, essayist, short story writer, novelist, and raconteur, his early paperback novels with their existential/immobilized heroes were the creations (to paraphrase Chandler) of a man not himself immobilized - a man who, instead, with his trademark black-humored prose, doggedly examined the mind-thrumming banalities of our materially sated but intellectually befuddled postwar world, crafting a body of work that is only now, 50-some years after his first appearance in print, beginning to be widely appreciated.

She was leaning against the door. Her smile was a sickly twisted grimace; the sort a prisoner gives a judge when he's asked if he has anything to say before he's sentenced. Russell Haxby is a ruthless used-car salesman obsessed with manipulating and cavorting with married women. In this classic of hard-boiled fiction, Charles Willeford crafts a wry, sardonic tale of hypocrisy, intrigue, and lust set in San Francisco in the early '50s.

Every morning, she wakes up unable to remember most of the last decade. Including her own wedding.

Classic 1950's Noir
This is a crime novel from the 1950's about a man who heads to a cabin in the Southwest to recover from a breakdown and becomes obsessed with an old murder case. It was republished in the 1980's as part of the excellent Black Lizard collection so you know it's a good one.
Stefan Rudnicki is an excellent narrator for this sort of book.

Excellent
I’ve read a couple of Brown’s SF novels & a couple of his noir/mystery & this is one of the best of his. Different than I expected with perhaps a very modern exploration of obsession I found well done & some red herrings affecting several elements of the novel. Basically a “cold case” type, but much more than that. Well written.
