About this listen

"The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom," and "a fountain of life" - the foundation on which all wisdom rests, as well as the source from whence it emanates.

Upon a principle so vastly important, all the subtle malignity of Satan has been directed, if possible to mislead the very elect; while the ungodly and impenitent fall under his devices.

To the mind enlightened by divine truth, the difference between a filial fear of offending God and the dread of punishment is very plain. Still, by the devil's sophistry, some of the most pious Christians have been puzzled and bewildered. Bunyan was not ignorant of Satan's devices, and he has roused the energies of his powerful mind, guided by divine truth, to render this important doctrine so clear and easy to be understood, that the believer may not err.

Great book on fearing God

I enjoyed how Bunyan goes through the whole Bible and details what it means to fear God. God is wonderful and He desires our praise for how He relates to us.

Something the churches of today forgot

Timely, yet, this bit of wisdom, will be cast aside for the trivial and the vain. And as a result, explains why churches today, do not know nor can they recognize, The GOD of holy writ. A return to The GOD of the holy scriptures, begins with an awe, and reverential fear of Him!

Deuteronomy 5:29 (KJV)
O that there were such an heart in them, that they would fear me, and keep all my commandments always, that it might be well with them, and with their children for ever!

Isaiah 29:13 (KJV)
Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near [me] with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men:

Gave me a better explanation of "the fear of God" (more a respect & wanting to be good to make your parents proud).

No trace of 'Fear' left behind

For those who want to dig deep into the "Fear of God," as it is theologically explained in the Bible, this is the book to read. Obviously, as a book that was written back in the 1600s, it should come as no surprise there is some old language in the book, along with the use of the KJV translation. But the content itself is rich with DEEP study and has more than enough content to tickle one's theological brain. The legendary John Bunyan, author of "Pilgrim's Progress," leaves no rock upturned in his search to wring out "Fear" as it's understood throughout the ENTIRE Bible. And as long as you're paying attention closely (which admittedly is not always easy to do if you're impassively listening to it), you will be treated to a very thorough and edifying treatment of this concept. I would argue, in fact, that there is not a more complete study of the "Fear of God" out there than this book.

The narration is good, but not great, which is ultimately not Jim Denison's fault, as it can be hard to read from a book that's of the older tradition. If someone gave this a more modern update, in as far as the Bible translation being used and more current language , that would be amazing. However, in the meantime, there is so much about this book to be enjoyed and to think on. I enjoyed it very much.
