About this listen

The Fifth Season: Booktrack Edition adds an immersive musical soundtrack to your audiobook listening experience!

At the end of the world, a woman must hide her secret power and find her kidnapped daughter in this "intricate and extraordinary" (The New York Times) Hugo Award-winning novel of power, oppression, and revolution.

This is the way the world ends...for the last time.

It starts with the great red rift across the heart of the world's sole continent, spewing ash that blots out the sun. It starts with death, with a murdered son and a missing daughter. It starts with betrayal, and long dormant wounds rising up to fester.

This is the Stillness, a land long familiar with catastrophe, where the power of the earth is wielded as a weapon. And where there is no mercy.

Listen to the first book in the critically acclaimed, three-time Hugo award-winning trilogy by NYT best-selling author N. K. Jemisin.

Booktrack is an immersive format that pairs traditional audiobook narration to complementary music. The tempo and rhythm of the score are in perfect harmony with the action and characters throughout the audiobook. Gently playing in the background, the music never overpowers or distracts from the narration, so listeners can enjoy every minute. When you purchase this Booktrack edition, you receive the exact narration as the traditional audiobook available, with the addition of music throughout.

Critic reviews

"With every new work, Jemisin's ability to build worlds and break hearts only grows." (Kirkus starred review)

"The Fifth Season is a powerful, epic novel of discovery, pain, and heartbreak.... It is a novel that demands much of its readers; it rewards them aplenty and is one of those novels that becomes more powerful after deep consideration and subsequent readings." (SFF World)

"A must-buy...breaks uncharted ground." (Library Journal starred review)

Such a promising start...

I really enjoyed the world building and the tension built in the three storylines. However, I found, as the novel progressed that the characters lacked development and the dialogue became cartoonish. That may be a bit strong, but in the end I enjoyed it.

I don't recommend reading this if you want volume 2 to be as good or better.

A masterpiece!

The story is fantastic, the performer truly amazing and the special sounds really adds to it.
Yes, I found the style a bit peculiar in the beginning and my partner said "it sounds as if a robot had written it", but after 20-30 minutes the story had swallowed me whole. It is brilliant! I can't wait to finish work to continue listening to it and already looking for the next book in the series.

I don't understand the bad reviews at all

This book was amazing. The narrator was excellent! And this version with the "Booktrack" added so much to the story, I really thoroughly enjoyed it. It's dystopian, it's very dark, and it's fantastic. I'm so excited to listen to the next two books but first I'm going to listen to this one again because I'm sure there are things I missed the first time through while trying to determine what was going on. I loved it. I really appreciated the LGBTQ+ representation in this story, it definitely added to the future-feeling aspect. The trans nature of one character doesn't really come into play other than being mentioned, but the romantic triad formed by 3 other characters really warmed my heart in this otherwise bleak and cold story. Highly recommend this book, this narrator, and the Booktrack version. So glad I chose this. I look forward to checking out other things by this author!

Slow burn

I was going to give up on this book so many times but, I wanted to know why it won a nebula. But the ending ties up everything neatly. This woman has an imagination!

5/5*

Robin Miles knocked the narration out of the park and while I don't want to spoil anything, she made a great book better.

Amazing story, well told.

This was NOT the book I expected. Not in the least. The characters are vibrant, and have wonderfully developed facets slowly draw forth in the telling of the story.

I highly recommend this book.
