About this listen
I take a deep shaky breath as I stand outside the house where it all happened. This is the one place I swore I would never return, but I have no choice…
Knocking on the front door, clutching my son Noah’s small hand, my heart is beating fast. When my foster mother sees me, her hands fly to her mouth in disbelief and she pulls us inside, asking the question I don’t want to answer: Why have you come back?
Soon the whole town is whispering about my miraculous return, fifteen years after I vanished in the middle of the night. But not everyone is happy to see me. My oldest friend thinks I’m keeping secrets, and they aren’t wrong. We were seen arguing the night I returned.
And then my friend is found dead.
Suddenly all eyes are on me. Someone is trying to use my return to frame me for my friend’s murder.
But they have no idea what I’m capable of, and why I really came back to this place. Or how far I’ll go to protect my precious little boy…
An absolutely gripping and unputdownable psychological thriller, packed with twist after jaw-dropping twist. Perfect for fans of Lisa Jewell, Gillian Flynn, and Lucinda Berry.

Story
I’ve never felt welcome in my husband Dominic’s family home. His parents make it clear I’m a poor comparison to his perfect first wife, Carla. But we’re here for Christmas, so it’s important to pretend everything is fine. Until Dominic’s mother bustles into our bedroom. Smiling thinly, she blindsides me: ‘You won’t mind, will you. Carla is coming for the holidays. She’s still one of the family to us, and she can’t get home because of the storm.’ My eyes widen—did she and Carla plan this on purpose? I know Dominic won’t say a thing. He never stands up to his parents.

Story
I look at our neighbours gathered in the garden for our annual summer barbeque, sipping chilled wine and smiling at my two daughters sprawled on the grass. I go inside to help refill glasses and then I hear it. A shrill scream that stops me in my tracks. I race outdoors to silence, a sea of bewildered faces. My first thought is for my girls, but they are there unhurt. With relief, we push the chilling sound to the back of our minds, returning to our drinks and conversations like it never happened.

Hickory Hills is the perfect place to raise a family. Everyone knows everyone. Sometimes, that’s a bad thing. The morning after the Halloween party, the word spreads from house to house, each resident gasping at the news, each mother holding their child tighter. Shelby has gone missing. My daughter should be distraught, but she’s claiming they weren’t even friends anymore. When I go to talk to her, I hear her giggling on the phone with Shelby’s boyfriend. And then I find her Halloween costume, stuffed into a bag in her closet, covered in blood.

I used to enjoy my job. I was good at it and felt fulfilled. I also used to enjoy spending time with the people I worked with. They say you spend more time with your work colleagues than you do with your family members, but that was fine by me because I made two very good friends at the office. I also allowed myself to get a little too close to my boss, but I soon realized that was a mistake. Unfortunately, it was too late by then, and as my personal and professional lives quickly blurred into one, that was when everything changed.

As if my mum breaking her hip and being rushed to hospital isn’t shocking enough for one day, now in her post-operative delirium, she’s just told me I’m not her daughter. That she has never been able to have children. The nurse reassures me that people are often confused after a trauma. But I know this woman so well and I can tell there’s a grain of truth in what she says. Which begs the questions: Who am I? Where did I come from? When I dig into the truth, I suddenly stir up a hornet’s nest of secrets, lies – and possibly a crime so unfathomable – that stretches back decades.

I used to have it all. My ex-boyfriend and I were madly in love and dreamed of starting a family. When I found out I couldn’t have children, it broke me. Now, at my job at the fertility clinic, I give other couples what I could never have. The day my ex and his new wife walk into my clinic, my heart shatters all over again. He’s back. Now, I stand here with a syringe trembling in my hand and an impossible decision to make: Do I help them conceive a child—even though I know he’s keeping a dangerous secret? Or do I protect his wife—my patient, now—and take what’s rightfully mine?

Nobody knows this truth better than Emily McCoy, a third year resident working in Baby City, the affectionate nickname for the busy Labor and Delivery unit at a New York City hospital. Kept me engaged, but narration hard to follow
I enjoyed the storyline of this book and it kept me engaged wondering about the main characters past and what was in store for her future. The characters were all very likable and well presented. The narrator actually has a very pleasant voice, but her cadence is very choppy and hard to follow. She places odd pauses in her reading and her inflection is a bit off at times. Mainly it's the choppiness that made it difficult.

Good Story Line
I think this was a good storyline. The narrator had a pleasant voice. However, her phrasing and the way she would pause for way too long at phrase points was very distracting.

Kept Me Engaged
A tad predictable in some places, but some unexpected twists as well. Overall, a good story that kept me engaged and interested from start to finish.
