About this listen

Explore the captivating history of the French Revolution.

Few historical events are as greatly revered and entirely misunderstood as the French Revolution that began in 1789. The memory of this complicated and lengthy political, violent uprising has been generally painted in broad - and oversimplified - strokes.

While the French Revolution was certainly centered around two lavish monarchs and an enlightened common class, there was so much more going on behind the scenes.

In The French Revolution: A Captivating Guide to the Ten-Year Revolution in France and the Impact Made by Napoleon Bonaparte, you will discover topics such as:

  • A brief history of the French Monarchy
  • Philosophies of the times
  • France in the 18th century
  • Marie Antoinette, Madame Deficit
  • Taxes, famine, and the Enlightenment
  • Sieyes’ “What Is the Third Estate?”
  • The National Assembly
  • Death of the Dauphin
  • Bastille Day
  • The first mayor of Paris
  • Declaration of the Rights of Man...and the Women’s March
  • France at war
  • The Flight to Varennes
  • Storming the Tuileries
  • The monarchy is outlawed
  • The fate of the colonies
  • The Louisiana Purchase
  • The Reign of Terror
  • The new French calendar
  • Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte
  • In the days and years afterward
  • And much, much more!

Simple and easy read with good references to the classical audio in between, this book pretty much completes and covers everything that one needs to know about the French revolution in short.

I like the author's work.

The audible is absolutely lucid, and state clearly and repeatedly that the great causes of the French Revolution are the decline of the nobility, the exploitation of the poor, and a general atmosphere of skepticism. Loss of belief, Carlyle says, leads to an outbreak of the diabolical in human beings.

Greatest history book ever.

French Revolution from Captivating History, is one of the best book. In their time the revolution was no farther away than World War Two is from us, which means they had a good general feel for it. Even at our present distance, it's not that tough to read Captivating History -- and his main points, rather than being hidden as some reviewers have said, are virtually screamed at the reader over and over again.

I came to this book with a rudimentary knowledge of the subject and finished it with a firm sense that I now understand the key moments in this fascinating and hugely important period in history.

Great!

I wanted a brief overview of the French revolution and I was not disappointed. However, early on in the book the narrator suggests referencing a timeline that is provided in the printed book, because the chapters are structured by topic rather than by chronological order. This approach works well for presenting a concise review of a complicated point in in history but it does not lend itself to the audiobook format particularly well.

Good, but in a Non-chronological Format.

Well worth the effort. To be sure, the reader will encounter a vast array of names and places that will sound foreign to his ear; players and actors who have long since left the world stage. Despite time and history having buried many of these names beneath her proud waves these waters are still navigable.

Worth the effort!

I really hate to read or listen to thick volumes with unnecessary information and analysis. This audiobook certainly don't has this.

This is a good introductory and understandable to the layperson account of the momentous event which could be used a good textbook in a course on the French Revolution, European and eighteenth century history or world history, a best book.

This is a good introduction to French Revolution

This is an excellent overview and summary. The audiobook give a very clear summary of the upshots and legacy of the revolution.

A little wordy for my tastes but gets the job done
