About this listen

Popular bachelor Robert "Bob" Barnwell is in no hurry to get married. Between running Barnwell’s, his family’s candy company, while his uncle is on his honeymoon and his round of social engagements, who has time to fall in love, especially when Barnwell’s is competition with Hanover’s, its chief rival, for a coveted cash prize? When pretty saleswoman Laura Stern convinces him to buy a typewriter, Bob hires her as a temporary secretary and finds himself unexpectedly attracted to her. But then calamity strikes the factory, and it looks as if the woman of Bob’s dream might be his worst Christmas nightmare come true.

Laura Stern loves the independence her work as a sales clerk and a volunteer teacher gives her. Give that up for a husband? No, thank you! Calling on England’s biggest candy company to demonstrate a typewriter is just part of her job. But when Robert Barnwell hires her to work the few weeks before Christmas, and they later wind up in the same community choir, her heart begins to take on a mind of its own. And just when it looks like Cupid is about to strike, an old nemesis makes its own mark, threatening not only Laura’s reputation but her newfound love as well.

Delightful 19th Century cozy mystery.

Any additional comments?

The Great Christmas Caper is an enjoyable novella written by Karen Hall. The story is a cross between a cozy mystery and historical romance with delightful results.

Set in the 19th Century, the story centers around one of London's most eligible bachelor's Bob Barnwell. Bob and his brother are put in charge of running his family’s candy company, which is engaged in a heated Christmas competition with its chief competitor. Disaster strikes soon after a pretty saleswoman named Laura persuades Bob to by a new machine - a typewriter - and Bob hires her as a temporary secretary. Most of the workers at his factory call of sick after getting food poisoning and Bob can't help but think Laura caused this disaster and is working undercover for his competitor. The rest of the story is finding out who really poisoned the workers, Laura finding a solution to getting the factory back on track to meet the Christmas demand, and Laura and Bob learning to trust each other again.

Caroline Miller narrated this audiobook and she did a wonderful job. She brought the characters to life, giving each character their own distinct voice. I received a copy of this audiobook in exchange for an unbiased review.
