About this listen

Dear Listener,

Unless you are a slug, a sea anemone, or mildew, you probably prefer not to be damp. You might also prefer not to listen to this audiobook, in which the Baudelaire siblings descend into the depths of despair, underwater. The horrors they encounter are too numerous to list, and include mushrooms, a mechanical monster, a distressing message from a lost friend, and tap dancing.

As a dedicated author who has pledged to keep recording the depressing story of the Baudelaires, I must continue to delve deep into the cavernous depths of the orphans' lives. You, on the other hand, may delve into some happier audiobook in order to keep your ears and your spirits from being dampened.

With all due respect,
Lemony Snicket

Featured Article: Mushroom Mania—11 Fantastic Listens About Fungi

Mushrooms are so much more than just a pizza topping. With new information and applications cropping up constantly, the world of fungal research is as deep and complex as mushrooms themselves. These seemingly innocent bundles of caps and stalks are just the fruiting body of a complex underground network of fungal threads called mycelia. Neither plant nor animal, the fungal kingdom lives mostly out of sight, but these days, never out of mind.

Would you consider the audio edition of The Grim Grotto to be better than the print version?

I haven't read the print version but I'm loving the audio versions.

What other book might you compare The Grim Grotto to and why?

Other Lemony Snickets, of course.

What does Tim Curry bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Love Mr Curry - he does an excellent array of voices too.

these stories are clever and use literary devices in a most inventive way. any repetition and fatiguing use of these devices becomes terrific fun in the voice of Curry's masterful narration. curry makes this story sing! GREAT fun!

Although it has been a few years, my children who are teens still remember these books. We always listened to them on car rides to Cape Cod. Now that they are teens, they sit in isolation each plugged into their own audio device. So if you have children from 6 to 12 and have a long car ride planned or drive with your kids on a regular basis, listen to this series. You should start with book #1, they are a hard listen out of order. At 5 hours in length you can make it pretty far down the highway.

This is another great story in the series - mostly because of the interesting setting and new cast of characters that we meet. Tim Curry narrates again! Fantastic!

This book is one of the best books in " A Series of Unfortunate Events "
Sunny makes wonderful food,Violet turns 15 years old,Klaus studied the tidal charts and found that the sugar bowl was carried by the tide into the Gorgonian Grotto, and Fiona found her long lost brother. Please read The Penultimate Peril and The End to learn what happens to the three Baudelaire children and see if Count Olaf ever gets defeated.Lemony Snicket is a wonderful author and Tim Curry is A very very good narrator.reread a Series Of Unfortunate Events and maybe even start rearranging the books so maybe instead of 12345678910111213,it could be 51968…however the ABC order of a Series Of Unfortunate Events goes or even just scramble the books Up like 101312451236789

Each book in this series is a brilliantly told tale, and I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this performance along with my little boy. Lemony Snicket's characteristic style of weaving the definition of words and expressions into the narrative makes it an excellent way to expand on vocabulary and general comprehension. My 6 year old boy is now well acquainted with the water cycle, and bitterly disappointed that the medusoid mycelium does not actually exist. It did however spawn an interest in reading up about actual fungi, so this book for us was not only top notch entertainment, but also a launchpad to further reading pleasure. You cannot go wrong with Lemony Snicket and I highly recommend this book.

Loved this book!
