About this listen

Alabama Hargrove is headed South to meet the family of her hunky handyman boyfriend, Reed O'Hara. On the way, she stumbles on a grand, old house and catches the renovating bug again. Reed and Alabama purchase the house, but when he discovers the lifeless body of the previous owner, Alabama must clear his name before their renovating days are over.

This small town has secrets, and so does the house; it's up to Alabama to solve the mystery or possibly be haunted for life.

Excellent narrator but not much of a story

The narrator made the story. Otherwise, there's really no plot here. I enjoyed the first book and eagerly bought this one. Unfortunately, while it still has the wry humor I thoroughly enjoyed in book 1, it does not contain the elements of a mystery or even a novel. I'd liken it more to a young girl's diary. Not much thought, but tons of emotion. The ghost in this book is only a footnote and is not even resolved. If you're looking for humor and a light, uninvolved chick tale, this is it.

This book should have been written by a computer.

What disappointed you about The Haunted Fixer-Upper?

The characters and the writing style are all over the map. 1 minute the main character is intelligent and halfway savvy the next minute a complete moron. The main character's significant other is a poorly used plot device that is ignored by the author over half the time. The narrator is good.

Has The Haunted Fixer-Upper turned you off from other books in this genre?

I have read other books in this genre and thoroughly enjoyed them. Thank goodness this was not my 1st book of this genre. Had it been the 1st book in the genre I had read I probably would have been turned off completely.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Margie Lenhart?

I enjoyed the narrator and she did the best she could with what she had to work with.

What character would you cut from The Haunted Fixer-Upper?

The character I would cut from this novel isn't in the novel it's the editor. Some authors need a good strong editorial hand to keep them on track, this is one of those writers.

Any additional comments?

If this is the 1st book you have read of this genre don't let it disappoint you too badly there are many good books and authors in this area. Please try again. I would recommend you try something from Molly Harper Juliet Blackwell. Both are good authors with a good sense of humor.
