When she fails to save a baby bird abandoned in her garden, a series of events unfold that change everything. For one thing, her handsome new tutor, Adam Manus, sees her unusual potential and introduces her to Nobel Prize winner Stanley H. Fiske, who brings her out to Caltech to mentor her in quantum physics.

Fleur puts her preoccupation with the void to good use, making discoveries that promise to ease humanity's dependency on fossil fuels. But for all her brilliance, she is still a young girl, losing her virginity in a moment of naivete and learning the hard way to value the irreplaceable gift of friendship.

Fleur Robins has a very interesting way of looking at things. While everything points at Fleur being autistic, she is a bright child who enjoys reading the dictionary. She has a kindness that melts your heart and makes you love her. The people in her life, the ones that stay and the ones that come and go, are a group of unique individuals that are fascinating in their own right.

Fleur's father is a hypocritical politician. An anti-abortionist that married Fleur's mother after she became pregnant, not because he loved her but to save face. Her mother is an unhappy drinker who finds AA. There are many others, who in their own way, become a part of Fleur's life. The way that she relates to them, the story that she tells in her own unique way, will make you cry and make you laugh.

Sharon Heath wrote this story from Fleur's point of view and does an excellent job. The characters are developed well. The story flows. There are a lot of good conversation starters which would make this a good book club book.
