About this listen

"A thrilling page-turner." (Paula Hawkins, author of The Girl on the Train)

“Breathtaking.... As shocking as it is satisfying.” (The New York Times Book Review)

A riveting and sophisticated pause-resister inspired by one of the most shocking true crimes in 20th-century Britain: the Lord Lucan case.

“A better person would forgive him. A different sort of better person would have found him years ago.”

Claire is a hardworking doctor leading a simple, quiet life in London. She is also the daughter of the most notorious murder suspect in the country, though no one knows it. Nearly 30 years ago, while Claire and her brother slept upstairs, a brutal crime was committed in her family's townhouse. The next morning, her father's car was found abandoned near the English Channel, with bloodstains on the front seat. Her mother insisted she'd seen him in the house that night, but his powerful, privileged friends maintained his innocence. The first lord accused of murder in more than a century, he has been missing ever since. When the police tell Claire they've found him, her carefully calibrated existence begins to fracture. She doesn't know if she's the daughter of a murderer or a wronged man, but Claire will soon learn how far she'll go to finally find the truth.

Loosely inspired by one of the most notorious unsolved crimes of the 20th century - the Lord Lucan case - A Double Life is at once a riveting pause-resister and a moving reflection on women and violence, trauma and memory, and class and privilege.

Great story but hard to follow at times

Love this author and the narration was excellent. However, I wish the chapters had title indicating which character’s POV for each chapter as well as the year in which the story was taking place. A few times throughout this book it took me a while to reorient myself.

That ending!!

I enjoyed Flynn Berry's last novel, Under the Harrow, so when i saw she had a new one out, I had to get it. What a great book! I NEVER would have guessed that ending! NEVER!

The narrator, Fiona Hardingham is great!

This book is highly recommended!

A Double Life

I’m always amazed how immature British characters are (or seem). I mean, the main character is a physician, yet she is in a car with strangers, sitting on a guys lap cause there wasn’t enough seats, and passing @ bottle around while worrying about a traumatic event that happened years ago.Mainly, she worried that people would know she was the involved in a tragedy. It seems
like she would have moved on, or it would interfere with, and possibly destroy her career.

a good listen

I love Flynn Berry's writing more than I love her plots. She's a wonderful writer with an easy way with words and she knows how to grip readers immediately. I have found her books, as a whole, to be somewhat lacking. but I do enjoy reading them.
the narrator did a good job. she pronounces her "L"'s in a strange way, though, and i love to know where she's from. overall, i recommend.

Took a chance. So glad I did!

I enjoyed this book tremendously. I was familiar with the narrator but not the author. The story spools out in tantalizing bits and has some great twists towards the end. Will definitely check out other books by this author.

Disappointing

Had such high hopes, but the story was tedious and the characters all flat characatures.

OMG. Genius. Best one ever.

Berry has topped it all. I can't imagine any better. Am breathless. Written in the first person, as the daughter of the person who is guilty. What the family goes through ...incredible ending. Can't praise this author enough. She is a true "creative."

Beautiful descriptions, but slow at times

I enjoyed Flynn Berry’s second book. Her writing is rich and descriptive, but at times the story dragged. Most of the threat was internal and not many surprises or too much suspense. Still, I enjoyed the performance and will listen to her next book.
