Story
This is the way the world ends...for the last time. It starts with the great red rift across the heart of the world's sole continent, spewing ash that blots out the sun. It starts with death, with a murdered son and a missing daughter. It starts with betrayal, and long dormant wounds rising up to fester. This is the Stillness, a land long familiar with catastrophe, where the power of the earth is wielded as a weapon. And where there is no mercy.

What will become of our self-destructed planet? The answer shatters all expectations in this subversive speculation from the Hugo Award - winning author of the Broken Earth trilogy. An explorer returns to gather information from a climate-ravaged Earth that his ancestors, and others among the planet’s finest, fled centuries ago. The mission comes with a warning: A graveyard world awaits him. But so do those left behind - hopeless and unbeautiful wastes of humanity who should have died out ages ago.

Nahri has never believed in magic. Certainly, she has power; on the streets of 18th-century Cairo, she’s a con woman of unsurpassed talent. But she knows better than anyone that the trades she uses to get by - palm readings, zars, and a mysterious gift for healing - are all tricks, both the means to the delightful end of swindling Ottoman nobles and a reliable way to survive. But when Nahri accidentally summons Dara, an equally sly, darkly mysterious djinn warrior, to her side during one of her cons, she’s forced to reconsider her beliefs.

Magic, adventure, mystery, and romance combine in this epic debut in which a young princess must reclaim her dead mother’s throne, learn to be a ruler - and defeat the Red Queen, a powerful and malevolent sorceress determined to destroy her. On her 19th birthday, Princess Kelsea Raleigh Glynn, raised in exile, sets out on a perilous journey back to the castle of her birth to ascend her rightful throne. Plain and serious, a girl who loves books and learning, Kelsea bears little resemblance to her mother, the vain and frivolous Queen Elyssa.

Some of the parchment pages were the color of cream, thick and substantial, made to last many, many lifetimes. Other pages were thin and desiccated, positively yellow from age, and crackled alarmingly as Van Richten turned them over. There were no ornate illuminations, no fussy borders, only lines of plain text in hard black ink. The flowing handwriting was a bit difficult to follow at first; the writer's style of calligraphy had not been in common use for 300 years. No table of contents, but from the dates it looked to be some kind of history.

Everfair is a wonderful neo-Victorian alternate history novel that explores the question of what might have come of Belgium's disastrous colonization of the Congo if the native populations had learned about steam technology a bit earlier. Fabian Socialists from Great Britian join forces with African American missionaries to purchase land from the Belgian Congo's "owner", King Leopold II. This land, named Everfair, is set aside as a safe haven, an imaginary utopia for native populations of the Congo, as well as escaped slaves returning from America.

An original and complete story. The twists and turns are enjoyable throughout. And the story is restless in it's expansiveness. Freeman does a fantastic job at narration and brings life to each character and their respective intricacies.

Murder investigation during succession
N K Jemisin's The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms is a fantasy tale revolving around a young girl whose mother was murdered for unknown reasons. She is the granddaughter to the current ruler, but her mother abdicated her inheritance to marry a commoner from a distant land. She is now summoned to the Sky city to play a part in the succession ritual which she accepts partly out of duty, but also to investigate her mother's murder. In the Sky city, she must navigate the odd rituals of the ruling Arameri class as well as the tenuous relationship with gods and godlings who are under some measure of control, all while recognizing that her role in succession is to be the sacrificial lamb.
Jemisin crafts a complex origin tale for the gods, along with their semi-imprisonment by the Arameri. The gods and godlings are rather stereotypically constrained arbitrarily along with semantic confusion. At the same time, the Arameri have evolved a rather convoluted and confusing series of rituals that are whimsical at best. Finally, the home territory of Yeine displays a total role reversal for genders without any explanation for this state of affairs which seems at odds with the rest of the world. It's hard to envision how a technologically primitive society can survive when child bearing females are the ones dying in battles.
The narration is well done with a solid range of voices. Pacing is relaxed.

ahhhh Sooo good!
The whole story was so well thought out and the narrator was perfect. The ending tied everything up, I honestly wouldn't change a thing

Thoroughly Enjoyed This
I read The Broken Earth trilogy first, so I knew what to expect with NK's writing. What I didn't expect was Cassaundra's performance. Wow!!!
I'm starting the next book immediately! A very enjoyable story, with multilayered characters and a pretty solid plot.
DEFINITELY recommend.

Highly recommended
I was going to say it was a fresh, extraordinary take on a common premise, but considering how long ago it was published, maybe it was new at the time. Either way, it's a remarkably well-written and imaginative story with great world-building and fascinating characters. The narrator is also very talented. Looking forward to the next book.

So worth it!
This was the first of N. K. Jamison I've listened to. The book and narration by Casaundra Freeman were great. Can't wait to listen to the next book in the trilogy!

Fabulous!
Loved it, beautiful story and writing. I especially enjoyed the first person narration and how it truly contributed, a character and realistic storyteller.

I absolutely adore this book.
I love the story, the interesting turn of tropes (men are to be protected), and the outcome. I can't recommend this enough.
