About this listen

The Importance of Being Earnest is Wilde's most famous and oft-produced play. First performed in 1895, and subtitled "A Trivial Comedy for Serious People", it shows Wilde at his satirical and scathingly witty best. It follows the misadventures of Algy and Jack as they attempt to woo and wed Cecily and Gwendolen under the assumed name "Ernest", much to the disapproval of the aristocratic Lady Bracknell.

My favorite play and now my favorite audio!

What made the experience of listening to The Importance of Being Earnest the most enjoyable?

The eccentric characters leave a lot of room for interpretation and each actor had their own take on each character! At first, I was a little surprised..not quite envisioning Algernon or Jack like the way I perceived them in my mind. However, the actors quickly persuaded me that they were indeed superb to portray the two male leads. Lady B's huaghty attitude was of course PERFECTION. I just laugh the whole time she is speaking.

What other book might you compare The Importance of Being Earnest to and why?

I would say Anton Chekov's one act plays! The Bear and The Proposal. They are very similar in the way in which they mock society with humor.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes! I usually listen in the car so it really depends on travel times.

Any additional comments?

I hope this is taken with the warmest sentiment, but I felt like the stage directions were read with a little too low of a timber. It kind of interrupted the mood of the play.. which I guess it is supposed to do to signify changes in scene. Perhaps though it could have been lightened a tad because I do enjoy her voice! It really did not take away from the performance at all though.
