About this listen

A London officer goes undercover to expose a plot against the Crown.

Dover, England, 1808: Officer Alexander Moore goes undercover as a gambling gentleman to expose a high-stakes plot against the king - and he's a master of disguise, for Johanna Langley believes him to be quite the rogue...until she can no longer fight against his unrelenting charm.

All Johanna wants is to keep the family inn afloat, but when the rent and the hearth payment are due at the same time, where will she find the extra funds? If she doesn't come up with the money, there will be nowhere to go other than the workhouse - where she'll be separated from her ailing mother and 10-year-old brother.

Alex desperately wants to help Johanna, especially when she confides in him, but his mission - finding and bringing to justice a traitor to the Crown - must come first, or they could all end up dead.

Enjoyable If

If you enjoy a menagerie of strange characters you’ll love this book. Alex, Johanna, her little brother, and her mother are excellent characters. The others blur in and out of the different paths the novel takes. The ending is well done. There are a too many characters. Not the best performance of the men but still a good listen.

Awesome book and narrator!

WOW! I am so impressed with this audiobook. I’ve listened to many very good books and this one hits all the marks for me! The author explains in such detail to help you ‘feel’ what’s going on around the characters and the emotions they are feeling. There was plenty of suspense, action, emotion... And also what stands out to me now that I’ve finished it is that it retains all of this throughout the book until the very end. Many good audiobooks are detailed most of the way through but then finish with an ending that ties up too quickly and leaves me wishing it had drawn out a little more . Not this one. And the narrator did an awesome job with the many different characters. I’m so impressed and will look for more books by Michelle Griep.

Enjoyable and Interesting!

A little religious for my personal taste, BUT true to the characters and the time period and the overall story was interesting. I loved Nitsy and Mr. Nutbrown! They gave me a few chuckles while listening.

Crazy

This was the strangest well written book I’ve ever listened to. It had so many characters but they were distinct enough that after a bit of dialogue, you could remember where they came into the story last. I enjoyed the main character Johanna. And her mom. They were both strong women that worked hard, communicated well with each other without all the drama and whining. Well done

Fantastic!!

I truly enjoyed the characters! They had their little quirks, yet were believable. I looked forward to my next listening session, I'd say I couldn't put the book down, but I didn't have a paper copy!

Twists & Turns Keep You Guessing

There are so many twists and turns, especially in the last half of the book, I'm left a bit speechless. Michelle Griep's books never disappoint!
The set up did take some time in the beginning but it was very much worth it. There were times I felt so bad for Johanna, she had taken on all the responsibilities of running the in and taking care of her mother and her scamp of a younger brother.
When her heart is broken, Mam gave her the best words of wisdom "..broken things are always the beginning of better things..."
I loved all the twists and turns! It was hard to figure out who the bad guy was.
Mr. Nutbrown is a quirky character like none other.

Honestly, I did not care for the narration on this book, though I have enjoyed other stories narrated by Alison Larkin. I found that upping the playback speed improved it.

Well Written and Performed

This second in a series was very good and I'm looking forward to the next! Loved all characters but really adored little Thomas!

Nicely read interesting story

Enjoyed this very much. Lots of interesting historical info of the lower classes. Really liked the main female protagonist. She was strong and worked hard to try to help her family, even doing things that she knew were awful to try to make it. A refreshing change from some of these helpless vixens in historical romance.
