This is one of my favorite series by W.E.B. Griffin, and this installment did not disappoint. Having read a few of the reviews, I'm not sure why all the unhappiness with the narration. Michael Russotto narrated 6 of the first 7 books in this series, and, to my ears, his voice is the respective voice of the characters.

Griffin is one of my favorite authors. His characters are rich beyond words. If you get this deep into the series and you don't haven't grown to love Matthew Mark Paine, Peter Wohl and the gang, I'm not sure if you are capable of seeing lightning and hearing thunder. (A little Griffin figure of speech there :))

One of my favorite aspects of Griffin's writing is his dialogue. The bad new about that is that he has spoiled me for other writers. For example, when you go from one of W.E.B. Griffin's books to a Baldacci novel (in which nobody on Earth speaks like his characters...and I still like Baldacci novels, just saying...) you are left missing the witty dialogue of Griffin.

Great author. Great series. Great novel.

Other reviewers have described the reader’s (narrator is too grand a title for this pedestrian effort) shortcomings, so I won’t dwell on them here. That said, Griffin has written a good yarn with tight dialogue and a very strong plot. A better narrator would rate 5 stars across the board.

Agreed. Reader is atrocious but excellent story

All of his books are awesome reads. This is the last series I have not read. Look forward to reading all of them again!

Love it

This narrator is the WORST. Robotic, monotone voice is irritating and VERY difficult to listen to. Hey Dude, DON'T QUIT YER DAY JOB!! cuz this level of performance - no matter what you do - AIN'T CUTTING IT.

Monotone

I’ve been listening to the series in order. This one was great! I’m looking forward to the next in this series.

Great story

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Having a woman read the book. Women can lower their voices, but when a man tries to lighten their voices, or try for a sexy, breathy woman's voice, it ruins it. It is almost comical the way this narrator reads the woman's part.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Matt Payne. Young cop, who is always having to prove himself.

Would you be willing to try another one of Michael Russotto’s performances?

Are you kidding? I want my money back.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Investigators?

Really nothing. However, there is a lot of profanity by people you wouldn't think would go into course longshoremen type cussing, especially by high society gals.

Any additional comments?

Nothing further.

Horrible Narration

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Could not listen to the whole book because of the narrator, I love W,E,B, Griffin but not with that voice.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Not sure, poor narration did not allow me to "get into" the book

Would you be willing to try another one of Michael Russotto’s performances?

Absolutely not, could not even finish this one. I was picturing someone behind this massive microphone , covering one ear and saying "and to all the ships at sea" as from 75 years ago

Did The Investigators inspire you to do anything?

Yes, find another book.

Any additional comments?

This book has been in my library foir quite a while as I collected the entire series for a trip, can I still return it?

Narrator ruins Griffin...

Horrible dialog, cartoonist reading and unlikable characters. Add in an outlandish story line and you have a book that defies all belief it was written by WEB Griffin.

So not W.E.B.

I have listened to all of the WEB Griffin books, and have enjoyed every one, but the narration in this one is so bad I could not finish it. He sounds like a 10 year old reading in class. His reading is dry, and his version of the various voices is awful. They need to do a better job of editing their reades.
