About this listen

June 1941. Determined that the United States will be prepared for war, Franklin D. Roosevelt and "Wild Bill" Donovan orchestrate the most complex espionage organization in history, the Office of Strategic Services. Young and daring, the OSS assemble under a thin camouflage of diplomacy and then disperse throughout the world to conduct their operations. And no operation is more critical than the one being conducted by hotshot pilot Richard Canidy and his half-German friend Eric Fulmar: to secure the rare ore that will power a top-secret weapon coveted on both sides of the Atlantic - the atomic bomb.

Great story - great characters

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

WEB Griffin is one of my favorite authors. Great story, great narration, great history lesson. I read most of his books in the 90's. Now I'm listening to all of his books again and enjoying them even more. As I finish I forward the book to my son. I've got him hooked.

What other book might you compare The Last Heroes to and why?

All of Griffins series are great. I have not listened to any of his books that I have not enjoyed.

Which scene was your favorite?

The characters make most of the scenes great.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I'd love the time to be able to do that. Mostly I listen when I'm on the road for several hours. Great entertainment.

Awful narration performance and poor writing style

What did you like best about The Last Heroes? What did you like least?

This book seems to be an early writing attempt by the author. While the story is good, it is very distracting to have "he said.". constantly in the text just to be followed up 5 words later with "Canidy said". This in itself is distracting to a fault and is not necessary. I have read a lot of other books by this author and have not experienced this in those.

The book does a great job of pulling you into the story line of the two main characters, however when the other character's story lines are brought in they are rather uninteresting, a bit bothersome or distracting. I don't believe enough effort was built into these parts of the story and they end up being a necessary after thought.

Would you be willing to try another book from W. E. B. Griffin? Why or why not?

I will buy another book, but not on the merits of this particular book. I have read a good number of his novels and think they are fabulous. I will continue this series solely in the hope he improves quickly and that he finds a different narrator.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

I am a great fan of audio books, and have always been impressed with the ability of the narrators. This is the first book that I have to say was an awful narration. The character voices were forced and sounded awful. None of the voices sounded realistic. I hate to be so negative but I put the narration on par with a 6th grade drama reading. Knowing the narrator will also narrate the next book in the series gives me great pause to purchase it.

Do you think The Last Heroes needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

yes it is part of a series. Honestly, I really feel like the book was just getting started when it ended. the story line did not come to a close.

Great story.

Everything story and production wise was great. I did not enjoy the narrator that much. The best one I have heard so far did the first few of the corps series.

great book not performed well by narrator

Is there anything you would change about this book?

I would have someone else perform the narrative. Michael Russotto gave no life to the characters and read it like a dissertation. It was a starch contrast to the other titles by this author that are performed by other narrators

Would you be willing to try another book from W. E. B. Griffin? Why or why not?

yes, I love his audio books

What didn’t you like about Michael Russotto’s performance?

I would not call it a performance. It was a reading.

A great story, if not very pretentious

A historically accurate WW II fiction. It was enjoyable with a alot of sex and intrigue woven throughout. Typical of Griffin, it was full of vivid, bigger than life characters. The narrator did a great job bringing the pretentiousness of the high society characters to life. However, often he missed the right nuance tone of the sarcasm. While I prefer a gender mix of readers for the male and female characters, he did a respectable job with the woman. I look forward to the rest of the series.
