Publisher's summary

The Jonathan Shade series continues with books 4-6: The Complete Time Travel Trilogy

Includes:

Anubis Nights (Book 4)

Hunting a dead sorcerer in ancient Egypt

Sharon shows up with a time god named Chronos, and they send me back to ancient Egypt to stop a dead sorcerer named Henry Winslow from getting the Emerald Tablets of Thoth.

No big deal, right? If I can't stop him, the world I know will only be wiped from the sands of time.

For his murder....

Sunset Specters (Book 5)

Magic and murder in the Barbary Coast

Chasing a sorcerer through time sucks. Kelly and I find ourselves in 1877 hunting Henry Winslow in San Francisco's Barbary Coast.

That place is crazy. It's filled with gangs, crimps, thieves, cutthroats, prostitutes, magic, and a supernatural threat.

One thing is certain, we're not getting out of here alive.

Wizard’s Nocturne (Book 6)

A murder in layered time

I'm not a fan of time travel. Especially when it's of the slow variety.

So I find myself in New York City in the roaring 20s where flappers dance to jazz, you can't get a legal drink, and secret societies kill each other for magical dominance.

One cool thing is that I get to meet Esther as a living, breathing woman, but what's not so cool is that my presence could lead to her death.

I have to stop Henry Winslow, who is now at his most powerful, and I have two obstacles who just stepped out of the sands of time: Kelly Chan and her colleague, Jonathan Shade.

This series gets better and better

I love Jonathan Shade! These books are full of humor, crazy characters and just tons of fun. These three books are a trilogy that must be listened to in order. Book 1 begins a time travel journey for Jonathan, Kelly, Brand, Rayna and Esther are sent to three different time periods in the past by Sharon to stop a man named Henry Winslow from becoming a powerful wizard who will destroy everything. Henry has escaped from Hell, splitting himself into 3 and going to these different time periods to gather artifacts that will help him become immortal. The first is found in ancient Egypt days before the death of King Tut. Jonathan and Kelly arrive a few days before Henry does and become friends with King Tut and his wife/sister (and hey, it's not even Kentucky!) Ankhesenamun. Henry arrives and seems to be a really nice guy. But is he?

In book five, Jonathan and Kelly are hurled from Ancient Egypt to the 1870's, where Brand has been possessed by the ghost of a witch's dead lover. Adding to the story, Douglas Freeman, a black man, has come to town to kill the men who raped and murdered his wife and daughter. Their ghosts are with him, as well as a couple of the men from the gang whom Douglas has already killed. Jonathan learns that Henry Winslow's mother is still pregnant with him and Henry needs to get energy from both of his parents. But Jonathan kills Henry's father, cutting off part of the energy that Winslow needs. For revenge, Henry kills Kelly Chan, who is now Jonathan's girlfriend. This leaves Jonathan stranded in the 1870's.

In book six, Rayna arrives and meets Henry's adopted father - Jonathan! Jonathan is now an old man having lived in the past since the 1870's. He helped raise Henry, who sees Jonathan like a father. Jonathan has used a fake name all these years. Suddenly a young Jonathan and Kelly arrive from the future. We also learn that in the original timeline, Jonathan was sent back several years too early and fell in love with Esther, who later kills herself when Jonathan is sent back to the future.

Confused? Listen to these great stories and you won't be. Cutting them down to a synopsis is difficult without giving too much away. Gary Jonas has created likeable characters and crazy intriguing adventurous situations that are highly enjoyable.

And Joe Hempel? He IS Jonathan Shade!

Great series

The best series are the ones that really pull you in to the story. They make you feel real emotion. They make you want to keep reading because you are so involved with the characters. This is one of books. Even if, at some moments, I thought they were doing something utterly stupid. However, in those moments, I could still understand why they made those choices. Just like the other three books, these are full of action and very enjoyable.

These last three books has the same narrator as the first three. He did a great job as usual. My only complaint would be with the audio only. It seems like its far away or something at certain points. These moments don't last long maybe a few sentences at most every now and the. I'm not sure if that was intentional or not. Either way, it doesn't really take away from the story. I would definitely recommend this series.

I was given this book for free at my request in return for my unbiased opinion.

Loved it.

This series keeps getting better. These book ( #4-6 ) tell a connected story as Jonathan and his friends hunt a man through time. Yes, these 3 books have an overall time travel arc, and it's one heck of an entertaining tale. The book 4 takes us way back to ancient Egypt, book 5 pumps us forward quite a bit to Old West, and book 6 brings us to the roaring 20s, where we actually get to meet Esther before she became a ghost! It's incredibly entertaining and well worth the 17+ hours of listening time.

Joe Hempel does a fantastic job narrating these books, completely bringing Jonathan and his magical world to life.

I am hooked to this series.

I really liked books 1-3 in the first installment series of Jonathan Shade but after book 3 I didn't know what else they could do with the story or characters to make them more interesting in order for me to continue. Boy was I wrong. Bring on time travel, Egypt, pharaohs, Old West, the roaring 20s, speakeasys and new characters and you are in one hell of a ride. I am officially hooked to this series and the characters. To be honest Jonathan Shades character was not likable to me in the first couple books but he really grows as a character in these later books and has brought me around to him. I am intrigued for the follow ups and cant wait to read/hear them. As always Joe Hempel does a fantastic work with the narration, he is Jonathan Shade in my ears. Cant wait for the rest to come. . I was provided this audiobook at no charge by the author, publisher and/or narrator in exchange for an unbiased review via Audiobook Boom.

Interesting

Gary Jonas is a relatively new author to me as is the narrator Joe Hempel. This is a genre that I would not normally read. Having said that I actually enjoyed these books. The narrator certainly did a credible job with the narration of unique and interesting stories.

The characters were interesting and I found myself embroiled in the mystery, the magic and the supernatural elements involved in all the stories. I am fascinated with Ancient Egypt so this one was right up my alley.

Magical time travel adventure.

This was my first experience with Jonathan Shade, having missed the first set I was worried I would be lost, however that was not the case. I managed to understand enough of the background to find this trilogy enjoyable. Basically Jonathan and his friends are tasked to travel back to three points in time to stop a wizard from essentially ending the world by achieving immortality and rebirth. They travel to ancient Egypt, the wild west, and 1920s to stop each version of the wizard. Each book is set up in each time. I really enjoyed it and will probably listen again and find the first three as well. The narration was spectacular, Each character was unique and well done. Loved this series!

Do not read this series until you have read the first 3 books! And PAY ATTENTION!!. The last book is chock full of information you will understand only if you paid attention to the first 5 books. That being said this is a complete series I will definitely read again. Gary Jonas has a fantastic imagination that will keep the ready riveted to the book from the start. I love how the characters stay true to who they are and develop based on time and their experiences. I listened to the audio book and I really enjoyed Joe Hempel's narration. He has a fantastic voice that is easy to listen to and his character voices are spot on. I will definitely want to listen to more of his work.
