About this listen

What if I told you that the biggest impediment to mastery of your craft is not lack of time, desire, or even talent, but your creative process itself? What if I told you that the main difference between you and Bach or any master of the past, is how you approach your art, not some inborn genius you think you don’t possess?

Designed for all artists, writers, and musicians, The Keys to Prolific Creativity is a no-fluff guide to organizing your priorities, managing your growth, and designing a creative process that will help you achieve the creative output you have always desired.

Have you always wanted to write a book? Record an album? How about create a graphic novel? Lots of people have a burning passion for the art they want to create and a great store of talent to achieve it, yet find themselves empty-handed after years of effort.

The truth is that technical knowledge of your field is only half the battle. The other half is knowing how to create consistently over the long term, how to design your own work schedule and methods, and then, learning how to align those with your goals to finish your project and the next one!

David V. Stewart is an author, musician, and YouTuber, who has, in the last four years, written and published 11 fiction books (and designed the covers of all of them), one album, and hundreds of informative videos on writing, publishing, classical guitar, and film criticism. He did this while growing his family and working full time. In fact, almost everything was produced on one to two hours of work per day.

The Keys to Prolific Creativity represents the distillation of the nine principles he used to design his creative process across multiple realms of practice to deliver his creative products to market in a timely manner, while maintaining high standards.

A NO B.S guide to getting your Life together

I told myself after reading 30 self help books and realizing that the authors kept writing books and never seemed to improve their lives other than getting richer, that I was done with the self help genre. They typically bank on you subscribing to THEM as a person rather than the application of what they are trying to teach. However, I listened to this because I know the author and it was curious to me that he wrote a non fiction book, let alone, one of this nature. After listening to it in one day ( thank you for making an audiobook), and having been around for some of the periods of the growing pains discussed, I can tell you that there is no BS here. He dressed the best at the “antique shop” music store, he worked the hardest, and is exactly who he portrays himself to be in the book. I know these systems work because I saw him working them, and saw the fruits of his labor. What I like about this book is that is not filled with page after page of mindless guru type Babel that is meant to give you good feels. This is cutting your pancakes with a pocket knife because it’s simple and makes the most sense.

Insightful and Thought-Provoking; Helped Me Address Certain Bad Habits of Mine

I first learned of David V. Stewart through his eponymous YouTube channel. I have learned from his Storycraft videos, and I figured this book of his would be similarly insightful; I was not wrong.

This book challenged some of my beliefs concerning creativity and productivity and led me to reflect on my creative process and address certain bad habits of mine. Also, the author reads his material well; his voice and cadences are well-suited to reading material of this sort. I deducted one star from the “Performance” category only because I found certain aspects of the recording to be distracting, most notably a quiet but perceptible clicking noise that recurs throughout the audiobook, presumably at the beginning or end of takes. That is a minor quibble, though, and should not dissuade you from purchasing the audiobook.

I would recommend this book to anyone wishing to evaluate the efficacy of their creative processes and habits. As of writing this review, the author has posted chapters from this audiobook on his YouTube channel. You can check out some early chapters there to get a sense of what the book is like. Indeed, listening to the early chapters of the book was what prompted me to purchase the audiobook here on Audible.

Short, Insightful, & Unpretentious

Extraordinarily helpful. This book is lean and to the point. David Stewart does an excellent job explaining his Keys and gives plenty of evidence and anecdotes in support of why they are effective. I am normally very averse to self help books as they tend to be pretentious and of dubious effectiveness. The Keys to Prolific Creativity does not try to sell you a "program" or any kind of "secret technique". Instead, Stewart outlines his "Keys", which are more like habits and mindsets, that are far more adaptable to each individual person and various life situations. Unlike many other "ways to be successful", these keys strike me as very applicable, attainable, and practical. I really enjoyed that the book is narrated by the author himself. The only downside to this is that you can sometimes hear background sounds as I'm fairly certain he recorded this at his house. While that might bother some people, I did not feel that it detracted from the experience in any significant way. After listening to this, I have restructured my life in order to implement the ideas in the book. When was the last time you read something that actually changed the way you live?

Amazing!

Love the information on how to discipline oneself to maximize the amount of work you can get done while balancing your real life responsibilities, which is something i'm dealing with a lot more in my 30s now.

David does great job as both writer and the narrator. Easy and fun listening!

Looking forward to his future audio books.
