About this listen

In a land where stories of the Shadow Demon keep children shivering in bed and tales of the Yorel bring hope to the commoner, Yosyph is both the reason for their fear and their hope.

By day, Yosyph appears nothing more than a mute tavern-hand. By night, he plans a revolution and slips through shadow, rescuing those marked for death by the xenophobic queen.

When he learns that thousands of his people will be sent as slaves to the mines, he must choose — fight the royal army with an ill-prepared rebellion or journey to the land of his ancestors through the deadly King's Trial. If he succeeds, he'll win his kin's loyalty and their help.

His journey grows complicated when he rescues a maiden and enrages a prince, but if he doesn't return with help in time, the people he's loved and secretly served will be gone.

What a Surprise!

Absolutely loved this audiobook. It had a very well fleshed out world, great characters, some fun plot twists and flawlessly narrated. Super excited for the next installment, and I hope it comes out on audio soon! If it keeps up, this could be one of my all time favorite series, right up there with Harry Potter and the Hunger Games!

Very entertaining, and great morales taught

I really like how real life issues get answered through faith in God. Teaching a reliance on God is frequent in this series.

M. L. Farb does a great job in all aspects of sorry telling. My family is upset that I always listened ahead.

Grand Adventure

I loved The King's Trial; M. L. Farb's writing coupled with the narration by Neal Arango made for an enjoyable experience. I found the plot interesting and refreshing. The development of the characters was great and I am eager to continue their story. I did receive a promotional copy of this book; all thoughts and opinions are my own.

Not what I was expecting

Older characters than the cover implies. I thought this was going to be a middle grade novel but the characters are late teens and planning weddings and coronations. I had a hard time getting into the story and I re-listened to the beginning after getting through a few chapters. I understood the story better the second time and half way through the book I had that 'can't put this book down' kind of feeling. Overall a very good story.

Even better as an audiobook!

First, so you know, this is a VERY clean book. No swearing, no adult content. There are some battle scenes and people do get hurt, but it is my opinion that this book is appropriate for at least most ages.

This book is a Great Adventure! The male leads have interesting jorneys (especially the second of the two) that both help in the fight against the queen, and lead these boys to become men.

To be honest, I like it even better as an audiobook. The Narrator does a REALLY good job of bringing out the best in each character! Even the female lead (who in reading myself, I didn't particularly care for) was far more engaging and relatable.

All in all, I am happy with my purchase and look forward to more books by Ms. Farb!

Well written

This book is so well written. And the narrator’s voice is amazing. He did a wonderful job carrying over the personalities that I envisioned for the characters. A very enjoyable listen.
