About this listen

For a boy coming of age and discovering a magical self-reliance and new powers for every occasion, the future is in the cards, in this fantasy adventure.

Arthur lives with his father, a fallen but proud former noble, in Border Village #49, along with the other good folks condemned to toil in service to the Baron. But Arthur has an edge: a stolen heart card that secretly fell into his possession, thanks to a dragon. It’s a priceless source of power for the Baron and the tyrant will kill to get it back. Invaluable, too, to a young man of spellcasting ambitions.

So, at the behest of his father—and to save his own hide—Arthur flees and joins a trader caravan on the kingdom’s backroads. Mile by dusty mile, he gains new skills and learns more about his increasing capabilities. But when he meets Horatio, his sharp-tongued new best friend and a spell card collector himself, Arthur discovers the greater powers to come by building on the Legendary card hidden close to his heart.

One step ahead of the Baron’s hunters, Arthur and Horatio forge on under a sky full of guardian dragons—from the adorably loopy to the mystically wise—and their unflappable riders. Amidst danger, rescue, and friendships with both humans and those creatures of the more leathery variety, Arthur awakens to a newfound confidence . . . and the extraordinary things that can arise from the simplest magics.

The first volume of the hit progression fantasy series, featuring a unique card-based magic system, now available for the first time!

Critic reviews

“Honour Rae’s All the Skills has everything I love: great writing, an intriguing mystery, and badass dragons. Well, some of them are badass. Some are dweebs, and that makes it even more awesome. And the audio is some of Luke Daniels’s finest work.” —Matt Dinniman, bestselling author of Dungeon Crawler Carl

A delve into a world of magical cards

Imagine a world where magical creatures like dragons are born with magical cards or shards. Furthermore, the rich and noble get all the good stuff, while most of the rest have to live in the toil of feudalism.

The main character is a boy in a scourge town so miserable it has a number (49) instead of a name. An interesting event occurs, but he can't tell anyone about it. Also, the Baron's thugs are about, forcing the whole town into slave labor.

After the event, the boy is sent to help in the kitchen, and he finds he's *really* good at chopping carrots.

This is a very enjoyable story within the backdrop of miserable feudalism. The main character is very likable, it's easy to root for him.

Highly recommended.

What an amazing book!

This book is amazing and such a refreshing take on this LitRPG era of books! My only complaint at the time of this review is that book 2 isn’t out yet cause I cannot wait !!! The narrator did an outstanding job bring this book to life!

Incredibly good.

Can’t say enough. Great narration, refreshing story, wonderful world. I’ll likely check out what’s next on Royal Road! Can’t wait for Book 2.

Awesome!

Really loved the story and has a good MC, he is a little naive on the early chapters but that's just because he is still a kid with not really common knowledge since he grew up on prison camp. also wow the dragons were really cute too, tess getting all excited saving the boy but i really felt bad for the purple Corey and her desire to make her rider proud! definitely will be picking up the next book!

I love that LD adds bloopers at the end. The story moves along nicely. I found it very enjoyable.

So good!!!

Glad to start out the year with a really good book. Truly enjoyed.
Great pacing, not bored once, kept my attention the whole time. Sad to see it end. Ugh, now to find another, as I wait for the next one in the series to come out!!!
Luke Daniels is of course amazing like always.
The bloopers at the end were the best, had me cracking up.
I've already put this into my favorites and can't wait for the next book!!

Great story!

I really like this story. It’s the best new thing I have read in a while. I listened to the first and have been reading ahead on royal road. I get some good “Cradle” vibes with the speed of the progression. It’s not super fast, and the character makes a good use of his skills. And there is not excess fighting that you will just skim over to continue on with the story. This is well worth you time.
