Publisher's summary

The day after a Gothic door is returned to its original place in the Mottisham village church, two men are found dead. The Welsh villagers, closed and suspicious of outsiders, believe their deaths were not accidental, but part of an ancient legend that told of an unrepentant monk who tried to enter to the church by grasping the door's iron knocker.

Love the reader and author!!

Great reader of a wonderful author, bravo to this pairing of talents!! Although I love the Cadfael series best, this series is engaging and entertaining. It was a delight to learn that Ellis Peters is the pen name of a female author, I’m curious to learn more about her.

Even Genre Books Can Be Masterpieces

As all Ellis Peters/Edith Pargeter Books, this is a study of character in the context of time and place first and a murder mystery second. Yet it is one of the most intelligent and beguiling mysteries in the genre, sure to appease those mystery fans who say they don’t “get” Ellis Peters because she occasionally loses interest in the mystery in favor of the people involved. Here the characters are as fascinating and unique as any Jane Austen creation, yet the intrigue will entertain, and puzzle, anyone who thinks they know all the tropes. A wonderful combination of mystery, love story, and human observation.

Highly enjoyable

The story develops rapidly and holds the readers attention throughout with twists and turns toward the culmination of the murder(s). Has some humor as well, which delights.

More Inspector Felse, please!

As usual with Ellis Peters, the characters were engaging, the story was interesting, and the ending was gripping! Simon Prebble is a wonderful reader, and was in top form for this book. He gives each character his or her own voice, different point of view, and varying emotional depth. At the end, the murderer was creepily amoral, and the unlikely hero just wrung my heart.

Ellis Peters & Simon Prebble are a great combo, and this is a wonderful book! Please, Audible, get all of the "Recorded Books" recordings of Ellis Peters books that you can!!!!!!!

One of her best

I was surprised I enjoyed this book so much. I have always loved Peter's Cadfel series so I decided to give her Inspector Felse series a try. The story kept me guessing and I didn't figure out who did it until close to the end. Twists and turns kept the story moving. It is a mystery of its time, though, with old fashioned ideas about women and marriage. Simon Prebble is an exceptional narrator. He is perfect for this book.

Another great story from Ellis Peters

Ellis Peters is one of my favorite authors and Simon Prebble is a terrific narrator.

Peters writes brilliantly and with such compassion for ALL of her characters, even the villains, scoundrels, and just plain unpleasant folks. She must have been an amazing human being.

My favorite Inspector Felse mystery

Ellis Peters' prose is always a pleasure to read and Simon Prebble's narration is a joy to listen to. If you enjoy, Peters' Cadfael books, give Felse a try.

A most under-appreciated author

Ellis Peters combines good writing and "feel good" stories with a touch of subversive sentiment against "the law." Whenever I'm feeling a little down and overwhelmed by all this world has to deal with, Ellis Peters doesn't put it right again, but she does provide a brief escape.
