About this listen

In this mystery from New York Times bestselling author Dick Francis, a jockey becomes the sole inheritor of his late brother’s business, horse, mistress, and enemies.

Steeplechase jockey Derek Franklin has had more broken bones than he cares to count, but it seems his latest injury could very well bring his days on the race course to a screeching halt. But that’s the least of his concerns when his brother turns up dead, leaving Derek as the sole inheritor of his estate. It doesn’t take long for Derek to learn that his brother—a magistrate who imported and sold semiprecious stones—was keeping more than his share of secrets. Now Derek must recover $1.5 million worth of missing diamonds—and find out who wanted his brother dead—or else his career won’t be the only thing in danger of being cut short …

Another Duck Francis Classic

A great story read by one of the top narrators - not to be missed. A classic modern English hero - intelligent, thoughtful, caring, tough, cultured but not snobbish who lives a “simple” life of high stakes racing only to be catapulted into the turmoil of a new life through the death of his brother. What a great ride for the reader/listener.

Great story teller!

Simon Prebble is so good! Love the way he delivers the story. Dick Francis weaves a story that always makes you think that you’ll never find the solution but bit by bit, with well-placed dead-ends, the solution appears. Fun read!

The Master Does It Again!

This is one of my favourite Dick Francis novels and I was so glad to see that it has now come to Audible since you can no longer listen to it on YouTube. Francis’s plots are twisty, his way of thinking leaves you feeling dazed, yet you know and can fully grasp every move the characters make and why they make them. The narrator is not the best at reading Francis’s books, but he certainly doesn’t disgrace himself.

Great

Typical Francis. Lots of injuries, lots of suspects, always a love interest, decent mystery. These are good standbys between other reads.

Fascinating and fast-paced!

I really enjoyed learning a little about the gem trade and also the whole feel of the business environment. A bit unusual for DF and truly interesting! The puzzle-master aspect was also intriguing. I disliked the constant pain and violent attacks repeatedly suffered by the hero who shook it off with ridiculously cool aplomb. Detracted from what was otherwise a really great story, IMHO

Classic Dick Francis

I love every book I read from Dick Francis. He has a way of drawing you into the story that not every author can do. I seldom can figure out who the bad guy is before he reveals the person.
