Firefly, one of the river people, yearns to be an inker and tattoo giants, just like her mother. But one morning a rogue giant kidnaps her mother and takes her up to the plateau, a dangerous place for all river people. Firefly attempts to rescue her mother then learns her mother harbors a secret that calls into question everything Firefly ever believed about her people, her family, and herself.
From stampeding giants to flooding waters and burning mountains, Firefly copes with adventure and danger as her home and everything she knows and loves collapses. She must find the courage to survive in a new world built on the destruction of the old.

What did you like best about this story?
I enjoyed the freshness of the story. Mr. Milosevic writes beautifully. The details of the lives of the river/pocket people and the Giants were described and painted before me with the assistance of the narrator's performance. What about Jane Oppenheimer’s performance did you like?
Ms. Oppenheimer has a wonderful rhythm to her storytelling. She was able to transport me to the world Mr. Milosevic created.Any additional comments?

This book is not currently part of a series. According to the author, “No firm plans at this time, but, yes, I hope to write a sequel someday.”
Having just read a book that explained nothing, it was nice to start with an explanation of the basic geography and character backgrounds etc. It was straight forward and clear.
I like Firefly’s loyalty and persistence. I also like that she behaves like a real teenager - she makes impulsive decisions which later have serious consequences; and, towards the end, she is determined to do something she earlier thought foolish, simply because she is mad at the people who don’t want her to do it.
Unfortunately, I didn’t find the ending to be satisfactory. I felt like, although they learned something important, they didn’t really resolve their current situation.
NARRATION: Smooth, very storytellerish without being overly dramatic / Listened on 1.25 speed (my usual)
