About this listen

One cold December day, two men are blindsided by a hockey trade; one is the most decorated goalie in the league, while the other one is the youngest coach in the majors.

Jethro Hale is the last player Coach Clay Powers wants to see on his roster, but the G.M. pulls a fast one. And it's not like he can even explain why. Nobody knows about their love affair fifteen years ago.

Cue the all-star awkwardness, the painful memories and the reawakening of deep feelings on both sides.

Unfortunately, their attraction still burns brightly. But it can never be. A player and a coach? The scandal would overshadow the team’s banner year.

If only they could resist each other…

If you love grumpy heroes, high stakes hockey, struggling single parents and smoldering kisses, grab your copy of The Last Guy on Earth.

Absolutely loved it!!!

I have loved this entire Hockey Guys series, and this was probably my favorite of the three so far. Clay and Jethro are terrific characters, super likeable and it was great to finally really meet Clay. Teddy Hamilton and JF Harding were wonderful performers and brought these guys to life. I enjoyed this audio so much, I went back into my library and re-listened to The New Guy and I'm Your Guy and then listened to The Last Guy on Earth again! It was just as enjoyable the second time around and I picked up on little details I missed the first time. One reviewer complained about too much hockey, and I could NOT disagree more. Sarina Bowen is the reigning queen of the hockey romance genre because she does it so darn well. I hope Sarina never stops writing about all our favorite hockey players no matter who they fall for! Bring on more Brooklyn Hockey and Hockey Guys #4 please!!!

Best of the three, but enough hockey!

I wish the title had been The Last MM Hockey Book From Sarina Bowen, but that doesn't seem likely. Bowen's penchant for hockey clearly works her, and must appeal to the majority of her fanbase. Truth be told, one of my favorite MM titles is her hockey story, Understatement of the Year, so I can work with the theme. There are just so many hockey stories from her, and it seems, everyone else. This title teetered on a three star for me, but stepping back, there is so much dreck in this genre, it would be a mistake to not credit her ability to deliver such solid dialogue and thoughtfully constructed characters.

One that was not in question is the quality of the narration, you honestly don't get better than Hamilton/Harding if you must have a pair of narrators. If you have listened to the first book in this series, The New Guy, (oddly no longer available on Audible) Harding narrated the character of Hudson Newgate, and by extension, Clay Powers, when Newgate arrived in Colorado. For consistency, I would have loved for Harding to have voiced Powers, and Hamilton take on Hale. Regardless, this is an unbeatable pair. Few narrators are as gifted, and certainly very few deserve the ratings these two have earned.

It is disingenuous to suggest this is a stand alone series, Hale literally exploded into the end of book two, and we see that moment replayed in this book. Newgate and DiCosta both are back, and moments from their books replay here as well. They are all on the same team, and very interconnected. Speaking of interconnected, this title is some ways is nearly a Through the Looking Glass version of the The New Guy. As the story progresses, there are a lot of elements that make you think you've read this book before. And, tbh, you have.

In book one, Hudson's love interest, Gavin, has a daughter from a previous relationship he is raising, in this book it is Jethro with parental responsibility. Newgate struggled with his demanding father, here, Powers father is disapproving of his choice to pursue hockey. Gavin was a great cook, whose homemade ramen is second to none, here Powers is an all around kitchen savant. Newgate bungled his relationship with Gavin leading to painful separation, Hale bungles his relationship with Powers leading to a painful separation, and in each cars factor into the moment. Now, to be clear, there are some differences in this book that show these two have battle scars and are less willing to shy away from awkward conversations when on their own. Together they struggle to communicate at all.

The book feels a bit too long, although it is a very average length. I think this is due to the amount of time spent on the ice. Bowen uses a series of interspersed flashbacks in the first 1/3 of the book to bring the reader up to speed on the painful history between Powers and Hale. It is effective, and to her credit, smartly ends them with a smooth transition to present day. Much like the other two books in the series, the guys are deep in their own heads, creating problems that don't need to exist. In The New Guy, Newgate has major wake up moment, but continues to contract inward. I think this was done solely to allow for the introduction of Bess to the Colorado Cougars, and further the development of Stoney's character. I think she learned from that, and took a different approach here.

This change is important, in that it corrects some of what was off in the other two titles. Here, both guys realize that they have sacrificed so much of their lives for the love of hockey that there is a lot of opportunity for personal growth. Even if this wasn't a HEA, they were mentally prepared to move forward and really live life, rather than being trapped by the game. Hale's messed up family life keeps him on his toes, but his commitment to doing the right thing feels genuine and there are some really sweet moments, especially as the book concludes. Powers' story isn't fleshed out as fully as Hale's, but it still has a forward trajectory where we know that Powers will be ok. These elements feel fresh, and more importantly, feel real.

Ultimately, I do recommend this title, it has a lot going for it - especially if you have read the first two. You will appreciate the full cast of characters much more and not feel as weighted down by the formula aspects of I'm Your Guy, and to a lesser extent, The New Guy. That said, I will be hard pressed to revisit hockey anytime soon.

Didn’t disappoint!

I couldn’t wait for another book in this series to come out. Loved the story and the relationship complexities. The flashback chapters were very well done. Hope this isn’t the end of this series!!
