I am drooling waiting for the next book already. The writing is so smart and the story flows very well. If you like a good post-ap/zombie book you will love this series.

Bob @ Platypire Reviews

Aw man. Okay, so I've loved this series since the beginning, but this one, to me, was the best so far. The whole series has some great action and story telling, but this one had a couple of parts that made me stop and curse the authors for what they had done! I know that sounds like a bad thing, but it's not. I was able to get attached to the characters and story and thus felt their pain. And, there is definitely some pain in this one. *cries*

As always, I love he narrator they have been using for this.

Bob says: 5 Platypires!

Wow! Keeps getting better!

This series keeps getting better and better! There are a few sad losses in this book and one hell of an OMG ending! My jaw dropped! Bobby Adair and T.W. Piperbrook are really amazing authors. Sean Runnette is the perfect narrator for this story! Great series so far. I'll be sad to see it end.

Getting Predictable

Good story but you can see events coming. Seems to be making up for early complaints about women. Very predictable meet ups.

Undoubtedly the best but still lousy

Brae acts totally out of character. The plot twist felt contrived just to do something exciting and have something interesting to write about in the next book. Without that I would have given this 3 stars.

The other thing was the "ancient tech". Boy, everything really has to be soooo drawn out in these books. It just takes forever and leaves us in anticipation for the next book. Which we know, will be drawn out yet again.

Other than that, things start coming together nicely. Finally, the unbearable back story of how miserable life is under the power structure of Brighton comes to a resolution. Readers who couldn't bear to listen about the subjugation and abuse of women in the previous books may want to start reading again from here. Actually, everyone would do well to ignore the previous waste of time books and just start from this one.

McLeod Andrews should have been the narrator

What would have made The Last Refuge better?

More show--less tell

What was most disappointing about Bobby Adair and T.W. Piperbrook ’s story?

The way women are treated throughout the whole story is so negative and moronic.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

I know Sean Runette has narrated a lot of books. However even though he is always prepared, I don't care for his voice. I go out of my way avoiding books that he narrates. McLeod Andrews can make any book good.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

Throughout all of the books I wanted to hear more about the ancient city and Ivory and his teacher. There was a lightness to that part of the story that was refreshing.

Any additional comments?

I wanted to like the books--and I listened to them. I just wish there wasn't this overall pious tone throughout them, especially regarding women. That was tiresome. The whole story line could've been magical: wonderful. Meaning – it had potential.
