Publisher's summary
The death of a legendary actress reveals a wealth of Hollywood secrets in a breathtaking novel about betrayal, rivalry, and the punishing brutality of fame.
One of the brightest stars of Hollywood’s golden age was Lily Adams, the beloved picture of all-American innocence. Why she suddenly vanished from the spotlight was a mystery even to those closest to her.
Upon Lily’s death seventy years later, her granddaughter, Carolyn Prior, struggles to understand a woman she loved but never really knew. Then, sifting through the memorabilia of a once-glamorous career, Carolyn comes across a letter from her grandmother. It’s the trembling admission of a secret life and a story that begins and ends with superstar Stella Lane, Lily’s archrival of the silver screen—a bombshell who was brutally murdered.
As Carolyn unearths her grandmother’s connection to the notorious unsolved slaying, her life collides with Lily’s in the most shocking ways. And with each stunning new revelation, Carolyn must decide how much she is willing to risk to unlock the truth.

Story
The modern audience hasn't had a chance to truly appreciate the unknowing dread that readers would have felt when reading Bram Stoker's original 1897 manuscript. Most modern productions employ campiness or sound effects to try to bring back that gothic tension, but we've tried something different. By returning to Stoker's original storytelling structure - a series of letters and journal entries voiced by Jonathan Harker, Dr. Van Helsing, and other characters - with an all-star cast of narrators, we've sought to recapture its originally intended horror and power.

Narrator Dan Stevens ( Downton Abbey) presents an uncanny performance of Mary Shelley's timeless gothic novel, an epic battle between man and monster at its greatest literary pitch. In trying to create life, the young student Victor Frankenstein unleashes forces beyond his control, setting into motion a long and tragic chain of events that brings Victor to the very brink of madness. How he tries to destroy his creation, as it destroys everything Victor loves, is a powerful story of love, friendship, scientific hubris, and horror.

Nikki Bridges has it good. An enviable home in an upscale neighborhood, a heavenly-scented hobby making personal-blend perfumes, a cherished daughter, and comfortable rituals with a husband she loves. How was she to know it would all blow up with her husband’s affair, a blindsiding divorce, and an identity crisis she never saw coming? With little money, less work experience, and a modest apartment, Nikki is tentatively moving on. Along the way: a waitressing job, a bond with an empathetic group of friends, and reentering the dating game at fortysomething.

Tearing through millions of dollars, four continents, and a hearty collection of husbands, real-life heiress Aimée Crocker blazed an unbelievable trail of public notoriety, private pain, and the kind of strong independent woman the 1880s had never seen. Her life was stranger than fiction and brighter than the stars, and she whirled through her days as if she was being chased. Greer Macallister brilliantly takes us into a world you won’t soon forget.

1908, Long Island: For Millie Turner, the young wife of a powerful New York stockbroker, Rose Briar Hall—a gleaming edifice of white marble on the North Shore—is more than a home. Every detail speaks of Charles Turner's wealth, and its interior is testament to Millie's sophistication. All that's left is to prove her worthiness to be his bride. What better way than to throw a grand party for New York's social elite? After painstaking planning, the night of the event arrives and all is perfection—until Millie wakes to a cold, eerily quiet house, and a gray cloud where her memory should be.

Lenny Marks is excellent at not having a life. She bikes home from work at exactly 4pm each day, buys the same groceries for the same meals every week, and owns thirty-six copies of The Hobbit (currently arranged by height). The closest thing she has to a friendship is playing Scrabble against an imaginary Monica Gellar while watching Friends reruns. And Lenny Marks is very, very good at not remembering what happened the day her mother and stepfather disappeared when she was still a child. The day a voice in the back of her mind started whispering, You did this.

Historical mystery set around Hollywood’s Golden Age!
The Last Secret of Lily Adams is a recently released historical fiction mystery! I saw this one available on KU read and listen (you get the audiobook if you download the ebook) and I instantly grabbed it. It’s told in dual timeline with present day and a tale from Hollywood’s Golden Age! I really enjoyed this one and can’t wait to see what else the author releases as this was their debut.
In present day we are following Carolyn and her teenage daughter. Recently divorced, Carolyn and her daughter are in California to clear out her beloved grandmother’s home. Her grandmother was Lily Adams, one of Hollywood’s Golden Age darlings. Lily left clear instructions in her will that there was to be no funeral and any item of historical value in her home be donated to the Golden Age Museum for an exhibit about her life. Carolyn finds her grandmother’s diary and a letter with it about a secret she kept for years and has to finally share,“My story begins and ends with Stella Lane.” Carolyn is shocked since Stella Lane was another famous actress of the Golden Age who was brutally murdered, and she had no idea her grandmother even knew her…
In the other chapters, we go back in time and follow Lily Adams’ life and career. She started out working as a lowly employee in the costume department of a movie studio, always dreaming she’d one day grace the screens. And then seeing that come to be and the complicated relationships that came with that life!
I really enjoyed this one! It was fast-paced and kept me intrigued. And of course coming with the audio for being on KU read and listen was definitely a win. I’m excited now to see what else this author writes.
