Publisher's summary

INCLUDES A NEW INTRODUCTION BY PATRICK ROTHFUSS

Experience one of the most enduring classics of the twentieth century and the book that The Atlantic has called “one of the best fantasy novels ever.”

The unicorn lived in a lilac wood, and she lived all alone...

...so she ventured out from the safety of the enchanted forest on a quest for others of her kind. Joined along the way by the bumbling magician Schmendrick and the indomitable Molly Grue, the unicorn learns all about the joys and sorrows of life and love before meeting her destiny in the castle of a despondent monarch—and confronting the creature that would drive her kind to extinction....

In The Last Unicorn, renowned and beloved novelist Peter S. Beagle spins a poignant tale of love, loss, and wonder that has resonated with millions of readers around the world.

“Peter S. Beagle illuminates with his own particular magic.”—Ursula K. Le Guin

Critic reviews

“Comes alive and stays alive on bright intensity of imagination.”—The New York Times Book Review

“Written in lyrical prose and rife with both whimsical humor and philosophical ruminations on what it means to be human, Beagle spins a quasi-medieval fairy tale that remains timeless.”—Time

The Last Unicorn is the best book I have ever read. You need to read it. If you've already read it, you need to read it again.”—Patrick Rothfuss

naturally more beautiful than the movie

having seen the movie multiple times, listening to this book played the scenes in my mind so beautifully while adding more detail, giving an extra richness to my memories of the story. and as an adult, I can properly appreciate the witty wisdom that's sprinkled throughout its entirety. truly a great listen for adults and children alike

Definition of an enchanting tale

I remember watching the VHS of The Last Unicorn with my mother more times than I can count as a child. Seeing it's colorful case on the shelf at the local movie rental I'd pause, even if I wasn't going to rent it that night, and admire the illustration before moving on and renting The Dark Crystal or Secret of Nihm. I've never actually read the book, but this reproduction was masterful from the content to the rich narrator herself.

Recommend.

Absolutely Great Narrator

Listening to this story gave me a new perspective into the animated film—which I adored as a child. The narrator is so talented I felt like I was immersed jn the movie just by listening.

Terrific Book, Poor Reading

I've been waiting for this old favorite to become available again-- I even listed all the way through despite the terrible reading. The main reader (I assume Orlagh Cassidy?) reads like she's reading a bedtime story to little kids, in a kind of saccharine sing-songy voice, which is even worse when it comes to the songs. This may be fantasy, but it is not a book for children, so this is entirely inappropriate. I thought at first she did the voices too, but it looks like that's the other reader. He's terrible too- a combination of exaggerated overacting and ignoring the nuance that the words and phrasing should have. Both readers are more about creating a certain sound than about bringing the tone of the text out. Beagle has a wonderful gift of playful poetic reference, and neither one is capable of doing anything but obscuring it. That said, I have bought audiobooks which I couldn't bear to listen to (and when they're that bad you're not even allowed to review them). This wasn't quite as bad as that, but the book deserves a better reader. I will hope for a different edition.

I loved this book

This book feels like the old stories a kindergarten teacher would read during rug time

How well it matched the movie

I loved the pacing, the play on words, and inside jokes. Words words words words

Really enjoyed this book, and couldn't have imagined a better reader, to be honest.
