About this listen

The year 3643 B.C.E: a time of social upheaval and moral chaos. Inanna, a passionate and beautiful girl, with psychic powers and a strong connection to nature, is a member of a nomadic tribe that has spent years violently infiltrating the peace-loving, long-standing cities of Mesopatamia.

When her brother executes her sister for adultery, Inanna runs away from her family and her people in search of a community where women fight and rule, and where sex and love are worshipped, not forbidden. In the City of Dove her powers lead her to the son of the queen, and she realizes she is destined to rule this city. She must choose between her adopted family and the family she left behind as her beloved city steals for battle against the nomads of Inanna’s past.

Editorial reviews

Fantasy and ancient mythology collide in this tale of earth mothers, volcano gods, and one girl’s destiny to rule the fictional City of Dove in 3643 BC Mesopotamia. Drawing heavily on the epic poems of the Sumerians, Mary Mackey weaves romance, battle, worship, and passion together effortlessly.

Christine Williams gives the audiobook a sensual flair, bringing the lush backdrop and heroic characters to life. Williams lets this yarn unfurl in the oral tradition of the cultures it borrows from. If adventure and ancient cultures excite you or you simply want to escape into a strange and magical world you won't be able to resist The Last Warrior Queen.

Well written but sad

This book is really well written but terribly sad it seems like everything goes wrong in it. I prefer the series that came after this book The Year the Horses Came which is much more in depth on the same vein.

Very enjoyable!

The narration was good, the story was good, well developed so you could really picture what was happening. Worth the "read".

Narrator sounds like a newsreader

This narrator sounds like she is so caught up in making her voice sound smooth and professional, that she isn’t paying attention to what she is reading. Often the tone of voice doesn’t match what’s happening in the story. Every character sounds the same and every event is read with the same lack of passion. No matter what’s happening in the story, her voice does not reflect excitement, passion, wonder… Every sentence seems to start and end on the exact same note. Honestly, couldn’t continue listening. It was so distracting. Very disappointing as I love Mary Mackey’s books and listened to the Earthsong series on Audible. The excellent narration of *those* allows you to get lost in the story. This one… I could never invest in what was happening when every sentence is read as if she’s giving a report on NPR.

Agree with the review that it’s good but sad!

I also prefer the trilogy that is much more complex and not quite as tragic!

The author tends to throw out spoilers instead of allowing the events to unfold

This didn’t bother me at first but it happened enough times that it became annoying and really felt like a spoiler. The voice actor make inana sound like a brat and blurs any growth the protagonist made.

The Queen of Bad Decisions

Think of a logical choice, this character will without exception make the opposite choice leading to disaster at every turn.

Don't bother.

Glad I did not pay for this. I like all kinds of books but this one was just not there for me.
