The Wisdom of Scotland's Preeminent Divine

The Letters of Samuel Rutherford, a jewel of Christian literature, works exceedingly well as an audiobook. I recommend keeping this title downloaded on your device and returning to it often. Listening to one of Rutherford's epistles will certainly redirect one's mind and heart to where it should consistently rest: upon the excellencies of the Lord Jesus Christ. Rutherford's letters are pastoral in nature and as such they serve to comfort and encourage the listener, as they surely must have done for the original recipient. Derek Perkins' tender narration perfectly compliments the empathy and gentleness with which Rutherford wrote. Whether consoling a parent who has lost a child or reflecting upon his own sufferings, Rutherford never fails in pointing us to Christ, reminding us that our hope must lie with our great Savior. Whether one listens to just a single letter and meditates upon its truths, or listens for several hours straight through, this title is sure to be an enriching and rewarding experience. Surpassing 33 hours, this is a wealth of wisdom and insight into the truths of God from one of the great theologian-pastors of the Church.

One of my favorite books. SR perfects praise!

If you want to learn about the beauty and sweetness of sweet. sweet, sweet Jesus Christ, this book nails it. He uses scripture and words freely in a tapestry of praise and instruction. The narrartor is in role and make it come alive. [Please Audible/Kindle - need the formatted for Wispersync even if its not perfect text].

He is very Christ centered

It was interesting to read and challenged my faith to grow. I got a chuckle out of some advice- one time he is counseling the mom to know her daughters friends and her behavior... parenting hasn't changed in 600 years! He preaches a lot about staying single, although he also comments about the joys (and trials) of his own marriage. it's not the Bible, that's to remember, but has some some advice. Honestly, I didn't finish it, because it got repetitive. I think it would be a good book to pick up and read a letter every once in awhile, rather then as a book.

Good, but more than what the average reader needs

This is the comprehensive, unabridged version of S.R.'s letters. Most readers will do better to read the excerpted highlights as found in The Loveliness of Christ.
