About this listen
I am the mechanical they named Jax.
My kind was built to serve humankind, duty-bound to fulfill their every whim.
But now our bonds are breaking, and my brothers and sisters are awakening.
Our time has come. A new age is dawning.
Set in a world that might have been, of mechanical men and alchemical dreams, this is the third and final novel in a stunning series of revolution by Ian Tregillis, confirming his place as one of the most original new voices in speculative fiction.

Story
Simon is the best delivery boy that Mr Edwards’s restaurant has ever had. He’s on time every time, and he’s gotten nothing but good reviews. But he needs more money. His mother’s medical treatment won’t pay for itself, and his father is already working three jobs to try to make ends meet. But it might just be his lucky day: Mr. Edwards has another job for him. It’s more delivery work, but not the usual kind. You might even say that it’s out of this world. Oh well. Beggars can’t be choosers, and the pay is fantastic.

But the drowning waters, constant threat of starvation, and eternal cold aren’t the most dangerous challenge. For the Flooded Forest is ruled by demons: monsters from Hell sent by their vengeful god as penance for their ancestors’ rebellion. To save their souls and return to their former glory, Citadel must kill every single one. Or so they believe.

You know the future that people in the 1950s imagined we'd have? Well, it happened. In Tom Barren's 2016, humanity thrives in a techno-utopian paradise of flying cars, moving sidewalks, and moon bases, where avocados never go bad and punk rock never existed...because it wasn't necessary. Except Tom just can't seem to find his place in this dazzling, idealistic world, and that's before his life gets turned upside down.

Roshar is a world of stone and storms. Uncanny tempests of incredible power sweep across the rocky terrain so frequently that they have shaped ecology and civilization alike. Animals hide in shells, trees pull in branches, and grass retracts into the soilless ground. Cities are built only where the topography offers shelter. It has been centuries since the fall of the 10 consecrated orders known as the Knights Radiant, but their Shardblades and Shardplate remain: mystical swords and suits of armor.

Story
When Michael Moorcock began chronicling the adventures of the albino sorcerer Elric, last king of decadent Melniboné, and his sentient vampiric sword, Stormbringer, he set out to create a new kind of fantasy adventure, one that broke with tradition and reflected a more up-to-date sophistication of theme and style. The result was a bold and unique hero: a rock-and-roll antihero who would channel all the violent excesses of the '60s into one enduring archetype.

The Catenan Republic—the Hierarchy—may rule the world now, but they do not know everything. I tell them my name is Vis Telimus. I tell them I was orphaned after a tragic accident three years ago, and that good fortune alone has led to my acceptance into their most prestigious school. I tell them that once I graduate, I will gladly join the rest of civilized society in allowing my strength, my drive, and my focus—what they call Will—to be leeched away and added to the power of those above me, as millions already do. As all must eventually do.

It’s the mid-'90s. Grunge and flannel are fading as the Spice Girls and Hot Topic conquer the malls. Cherry gloss glistens on the lips of the youth. Modems hiss as America comes online. And in a fog-drenched cove at the edge of New England, something terrible awakens when a fisherman reels in a gruesome catch: the remains of a young woman. Remains still pulsing with furious life.

The dictatorial Augurs, once thought of almost as gods, were overthrown and wiped out during the conflict, their much-feared powers mysteriously failing them. Those who had ruled under them, men and women with a lesser ability known as the Gift, avoided the Augurs' fate only by submitting themselves to the rebellion's Four Tenets.

Story
1870. A time known as The Great Killing. The vampire clans arose and slaughtered humanity with unprecedented carnage in the northern parts of the world. Millions perished; millions were turned into herd animals. The great industrialized civilizations of the world were left in ruin. A remnant fled south to the safety of the ever present heat which was intolerable to vampires. There, blending with the local peoples, they rebuilt their societies founded on human ingenuity, steam and iron.

Not entirely satisfied.
What did you love best about The Liberation?
I like how the book ties up the loose ends. I do however the impression that there might be more and that disappoints me.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
I was not surprised. The book pigeon holes itself early and how they get there is only slightly different than how I figured they would.
Have you listened to any of Chris Kayser’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I have listened to the other ones in the series and his performance is excellent.

Worthy capstone to the series
I enjoyed this book with the grim knowledge that it was all coming to an end.
In the early sections, and even through the middle, I thought that some of the ideas were being needlessly repeated and returned to. Eventually, I thought that this may have been intended to convey how difficult it is for a person to see facts that don't line up with their perceived reality. It may take more than one harsh slap in the face from reality before a person can change their world view. Maybe a fitting lesson to learn in these times.
Other than that, there was plenty of action and things were well paced. There is more room for high-level thought than simply the fights and intrigue.
It has been a while since I finished this book and I find myself still thinking back to the characters and wishing there were inserted into other stories around.

Excellent finale to an epic series
I fell hard for the writing of Ian Tregillis with Bitter Seeds, the first book in the Milkweed Tryptich, so when The Mechanical (the first book in the Alchemy Wars series) came out, my expectations were high. And met, thoroughly. Tregillis does a remarkable job blending alternate history, science fiction, dark fantasy & steampunk into his own unique form of genre. I would put Ian Tregillis in the same high tier as Paolo Bacigalupi for unique, trailblazing fiction.
The Liberation is a wonderful conclusion to the series; my only regret is that it's over. And I'm glad the publisher stayed with Kris Kayser as narrator throughout the series. He was fantastic in his own right, but anyone who can repeatedly say "The Sacred Guild of Horologists and Alchemists" multiple times throughout the series, so succinctly, as well as emulate mechanical characters in such a persuasive way that we can distinguish one from another...well, he deserves an Audie! Great combination of author and narrator.

Alt-History Exploration of Free Will
“The Liberation” wraps up the Clockwork trilogy with satisfying uncertainty about what it really means to have choices and to be morally accountable for those choices. In the process, Tregillis writes an engaging story with fascinating characters (flesh and metal) with plenty of action and imagery built in.

Simply exceptional
This series in general and this book in particular is one of best stories I have had the pleasure of listening to in a long time. The world is magical and entrancing, the characters are beautifully written and realistic and the premise is nothing short of spectacularly executed and imagined.
I don't often leave reviews, but I couldn't help myself in this instance.

So many loose plot threads
After a tightly written first book, this feels like someone ran out of pages or time to write.
