About this listen

When you bury your past, make sure that it’s dead.

It’s the mid-'90s. Grunge and flannel are fading as the Spice Girls and Hot Topic conquer the malls. Cherry gloss glistens on the lips of the youth. Modems hiss as America comes online.

And in a fog-drenched cove at the edge of New England, something terrible awakens when a fisherman reels in a gruesome catch: the remains of a young woman. Remains still pulsing with furious life.

For Megan Monroe and her friends, this is how their nightmare begins: a wet whisper over their shoulder; a dark hand reaching out from the edge of their sight; and a name clawing at the back of their minds.

A young woman scratched from their memory.

To stop this devouring terror, Megan will need to mend broken friendships and reassemble her fractured past. For what stalks them hungers to remake itself in their image… piece by bloody piece.

Dig into the haunted past with Head Like a Hole, a novel of malignant secrets, shattered friendships, and twisted bodily horror.

Worth checking out

Gave this a go on audible, and the narration by Tom Jordan was pretty solid.

I could tell within the first few chapters of this one that the writing felt a notch up. It read professional, with a clear voice, and wicked fast direction. The POVs and twirling timeframes keep you on the edge of your seat, and I was hooked to it in a way that I haven’t felt lately. While I’ve finished some other reads in between/since, I think this one started pulling me up out of the kind of slump I was forming. The Goosebumps-esque (but adult) cliffhanger chapter endings certainly helped.

A successful podcaster is looking into a mysterious past with sparse notes found in his uncle’s journal. Strangely, the story unravels itself, and other than him being a clever character and the vessel for some of the backstory, he wasn’t really a necessary character. But on the few occasions the story slows down, he gets the ball moving again, so it works out fine.

A story of mistrust, mistreatment, jealousy, and deceit, Head Like a Hole, is a powerhouse of revenge and regret. Not without its supernatural elements, the novel morphs more than once on what the reader can expect. Kind of like mixing the murder mystery side of a slasher with something tainted like the Ring or the Grudge. The novel has more than its far share of characters, but there are a few that have pretty flat desires/actions. The author does a pretty solid job of reigning it in to close it all up though. And I will definitely check out more by the author.

A work of art

This was so very original and I absolutely loved the story! The narration was incredible. Tom Jordan is easily my favorite narrator after this. The book is definitely one I’ll be recommending to everyone I know!

Body Horror and more!

The first time I saw the cover of this book, I knew that I would eventually read it. Once it was released as an audiobook, I had to give it a listen. And, I'm SO glad that I did!

This book effectively mixes body horror with a sci-fi feel to make a book that will stick with me for a long, long time. One way I judge a book is how much do I think about it while I'm still reading it and how long it stays with me after I finish. This book definitely does both of those things. In fact, I had to wait a few days to absorb what I had read and went back and listened to parts again just to make sure I knew what had happened.

There are some truly creepy/horror filled moments in this book and the psychological aspects added to the terror. It does have quite a bit of gore, but not enough for a wimp like me to give up on it. I think my only complaint is the way the story was presented. I didn't really care for the podcast interview aspect and thought that it detracted from the overall story. As an audiobook, it was a little hard to follow the timeline since the story jumped from place to place a lot.

The narrator did a great job and added a lot to the tension of the book. I will definitely be looking for more books by this author and more narrated by this narrator. Great read for a true horror fan!

Tom Jordan is one the best vocal performers.

This is the first book I've read by this author. As a fan of the weird, 'Head Like a Hole' caught my attention. The clarifying line, 'A Horror Novel' closed the deal, so to speak. Even a good title doesn't always mean a book will live up to an attention-grabbing title or book jacket. In this instance, I could not have been pleased with a book. From the opening pages, author Andrew Van Wey hooked this reader. At no point did I ever feel like I had read a similar tale. In fact, almost every chapter reveals surprises that kept my imagination working over time. I highly recommend this book if you are a fan of this genre. I look forward to reading additional works by this author.
The Audible performance by Tom Jordan is excellent. His talented portrayal of the characters is some of the best I've heard.

Chilling and Unexpected

Body horror, science fiction, psychological horror, and supernatural horror all blur together in a tale of revenge, regret, and transformation in the deeply haunting Head Like a Hole by Andrew Van Wey. It’s challenging to say much about this book without spoiling it, but I’ll do my best.

Something terrible washes ashore, a monstrous, inhuman thing with a hunger for revenge…and so much hunger altogether…bent on righting a wrong from years before. If they want any hope of surviving, a group of estranged friends must come together and solve a mystery that defies imagination…if they can survive that long. They’re hunted by a ghost from the past that is so much more than anyone could have bargained for.

Questions on the nature of identity, autonomy, and what defines a human being are deftly handled with Van Wey’s expert storytelling…and the slow reveal of a body horror nightmare unfolds in such a way that the reader is fully immersed and terrified that they’ve predicted the ending before it arrives, hoping that they’re wrong.

Tom Jordan’s narration of the story brings everything to life, a vivid unwholesome life.

I loved this book even though I am not into this genre!

There is intrigue, an awesome narrator, an original story, a touch of goofiness in the caracters yet they are totaly realistic, the descriptions of the unbelievable are sooo believable and convincing. Never a dragging moment in this book.

Unique in a good way!

I’ve been in a bit of a reading slump lately and this really got me out of it I think it was pretty quick it wrapped up all the plot lines nicely there wasn’t an exorbitant amount of sexual violence which is normal when horror novels are written by men. It was very gory very atmospheric really really good I can’t wait to read the rest of his stuff.
