About this listen

A strikingly original and absorbing mystery about a white-passing bookbinder in Victorian England and the secrets lurking on the estate where we she works, for fans of Fingersmith and The Confessions of Frannie Langton

The library is under lock and key. But its secrets can't be contained.

1896. After he brought her home from Jamaica as a baby, Florence's father had her hair hot-combed to make her look like the other girls. But as a young woman, Florence is not so easy to tame—and when she brings scandal to his door, the bookbinder throws her onto the streets of Manchester.

Intercepting her father's latest commission, Florence talks her way into the remote, forbidding Rose Hall to restore its collection of rare books. Lord Francis Belfield's library is old and full of secrets—but none so intriguing as the whispers about his late wife.

Then one night, the library is broken into. Strangely, all the priceless tomes remain untouched. Florence is puzzled, until she discovers a half-burned book in the fireplace. She realizes with horror that someone has found and set fire to the secret diary of Lord Belfield's wife–which may hold the clue to her fate…

Evocative, arresting and tightly plotted, The Library Thief is at once a propulsive Gothic mystery and a striking exploration of race, gender and self-discovery in Victorian England.

Have you ever finished book and thought - that was a great book - but there was just something missing? The Library Thief is a beautifully layered and intricate novel, filled with unexpected twists and a compelling mystery that kept me engaged throughout. Set against the backdrop of Victorian England, it weaves together themes of race, gender, survival, and the power of books in an immersive and thought-provoking way.

Florence, a bookbinder’s daughter, is cast out after a scandal and takes on the task of restoring an estate’s rare book collection at Rose Hall. But the more she works, the more secrets she uncovers—especially surrounding the late Lady Belfield. The novel is rich in detail, capturing not only the Gothic atmosphere of the house but also the constraints of Victorian society, particularly for women and people of color.

There are a lot of themes running around this book. Its exploration of historical realities, identity, and the weight of the past was nuanced and well-executed. The writing was strong, the pacing well-managed, and the story full of surprises. But, there was something about the characters that felt somewhat staid and distant, which I believe was intentional—a reflection of the rigid, emotionally restrained world they inhabited. That said, it made it harder to truly connect with Florence or the others. I rooted for her, and I felt bad for her, but I never deeply cared for her. Cora Kirk does a beautiful job of narrating the audiobook.

Despite that missing emotional spark, The Library Thief is a strong, intelligent, and well-crafted novel—one that kept me thinking long after I finished. If you enjoy historical fiction with a layered mystery and social commentary, it’s definitely worth a read. 4.5 stars.

Layered, Lush, and Smart

I didn’t care for the storyline of changing to rape & lots of perversion. I try to avoid books with those themes.

The beginning was great but 2nd half was not.

it seemed like a nice but simple story but grew with more details and layers that I anticipated. a very deep and engaging story.

More than expected!

Told from the perspective of a long hidden element of British history. Engagingly narrated, I was so absorbed I lost track of time. Get this book!
