Critic reviews

“A page-turner of a fantasy with elements of humor as well as intrigue, swordplay, and librarian-versus-hostile-book combat.” (Booklist)

If you know as many librarians as I do, you’ll love the concept. The book is probably listed in the card file under A for "action" and under Z for "zany", under D for "dangerous books" and certainly under C for "creatiive". If you are looking in an old-school card file, beware of paper cuts. On the other hand, it won't be listed under R for "real people." In brains, brawn, mind and heart, these are flat characters, so again beware of paper cuts. Granted, there was an attempt at depth, with a swordmaster-turned librarian, a prince who can't read, and young queen challenged by her age. In the end, this is Tom and Jerry (minus the laugh track), not Spirited Away.

I liked Magic Thief much better as a story; I liked this one mostly because of the concept of Dangerous Books.

Is it worth looking for them? Depends.

I of course loved that this book combined love of books, with adventure and fantasy.

The book has so much potential and yet you left disliking the main character and waiting for it to be over. Definitely not going to listen to the rest of the series.

Waste of time
