About this listen

With echoes of Just Mercy and An American Marriage, a remarkable memoir of a woman who falls in love with an incarcerated man - a poignant story of hope and disappointment that lays bare the toll prison takes not only on those behind bars, but on their families and relationships.

Ebony’s parents were high school sweethearts and married young. By the time Ebony was born, the marriage was disintegrating. As a little girl she witnessed her parents’ brutal verbal and physical fights, fueled by her father’s alcoholism. Then her father tried to kill her mother.

Those experiences drastically affected the way Ebony viewed love and set the pattern for her future romantic relationships. Despite being an educated and strong-minded woman determined not to repeat the mistakes of her parents - she would have a fairytale love - Ebony found herself drawn to bad boys: men who cheated; men who verbally abused her; men who disappointed her. Fed up, she swore to wait for the partner God chose for her.

Then she met Shaka Senghor. Though she felt an intense spiritual connection, Ebony struggled with the idea that this man behind bars for murder could be the good love God had for her. Through letters and visits, she and Shaka fell deeply in love.

Once Shaka came home, Ebony thought the worst was behind them. But Shaka’s release was the beginning of the end.

The Love Prison Made and Unmade is heartfelt. It reveals powerful lessons about love, sacrifice, courage, and forgiveness; of living your highest principles and learning not to judge someone by their worst acts. Ultimately, it is a stark reminder of the emotional cost of American justice on human lives - the partners, wives, children, and friends - beyond the prison walls.

A good read

If you’ve never been in this position this book gives you a graphic look at what it’s like to “date” someone in prison. At the very end they said words that rang so true ...he made promises no man coming home from prison should make. If you’re looking for a good read and open minded this is just the book. I throughly enjoyed it.

Awesome listening!

Engaging! DOPE!! I purchased this beautiful story via eBook to read while on vacation. Because of my own hectic days, I decided to finish using Audible. I am so glad I did! I remained drawn into Shaka & Ebony's love, journeys and quests to beat the odds. I didn't want to story to end! I cant wait to see what brilliance comes next. I also want to shout out Robin Miles! Bravo! I felt as if I was a fly on the wall. Great performance.

Biggest Decision of My Life!!!

Thank GOD for this book! Thank God for Ebony’s willingness to share her highs and lows of what it’s truly like being a noble, criminal justice activist/business partner/manager & publicist “Prison Wife.” This book sheds light on the heartaches of our years of dedication turning into a painful slap in the face, forcing us to rid our minds of the fantasy. My husband served 20yrs. We have a 23yr old daughter who’s sadly in prison now. This book helped me choose me! Whether or not my husband and I end up getting a divorce this book gave me the courage to leave a bad situation and force him to get treatment. Had I not stumbled across The Love Prison Made and Unmade I don’t think I would’ve made this decision on my own. I have no idea what’s in store for my future but I do believe that this book helped change the course of my life! I love how it explained her life story and why she made the choices that she did in relationships. I think this is a wonderful read for anybody regardless of what kind of relationship you have we have to understand what’s broken inside of us before we choose to be with someone. This should be definitely read by women and men everywhere! I truly do believe now that it’s a very selfish thing for any woman to think that a man can come home and be an amazing husband and provider out of prison. Men become emotionally detached due to their treatment in prison and do not want to acknowledge their psychological trauma. I don’t want to tell too much about this book but I promise you this read was life-changing for me! I even sent a copy to my daughter who is in prison so that she can better understand why I made the choice that I did.

I was completely engrossed in this story

I thought this was very well written. Almost poetic at times. I loved the way the author described her journey, how it tied into her childhood, and the spiritual lessons she learned. I couldn't stop listening, and finished the audio book in 2 days. I should add that I personally related to her story, and the way she described her emotional struggles felt like she was in my own head. Hoping she has plans for a Part 2. Would love to know how her story continues.
