Publisher's summary

Read by the author.

Using the written word as her witness statement, Jessica Willis Fisher gives a lacerating portrait of a girl finding her voice after years of being silenced and an unforgettable story of risk and faith.

Growing up the eldest daughter in a large, highly controlled, fundamentalist Christian household, Jessica Willis was groomed to perform, and to conform to her father's disturbing and chaotic teachings. Cut off from anything unapproved by her father, Jessica was persistently curious about the outside world, always wondering what was normal or potentially dangerous about her upbringing.

When the Willis family rocketed into fame after their appearances on multiple televised talent competitions in 2014, Jessica and her family landed their own reality TV show and toured across the globe, singing and dancing for millions. The world loved this beautiful family of kids; young and vivacious, the Willis's presented themselves to be extraordinary and happy. But the older and wiser Jessica got, the more she had to face that what was going on behind closed doors would forever be escalating.

In this elegant, harrowing story of the manipulation and codependency that defines abusive family relationships, Jessica Willis Fisher lets us see the formative moments of her childhood through her eyes. Fisher's haunting coming-of-age memoir captures the beauty and ugliness of a young woman finding her way—filled with longing, fear, confusion, secrecy, and most importantly, hope for the future.

Unspeakable: Surviving My Childhood and Finding My Voice shares:

  • An unflinching look at the manipulation and codependency that defines abusive family relationships
  • The formative moments of Jessica's childhood through her eyes
  • An unforgettable story of courage and strength

Beautifully written and monumental in its bravery, Fisher's story is proof that we can all become so much more that the things that happen to us.

Invisible Girl

In my own healing journey as a survivor of incest and CSA, I wrote a poem called The Invisible Girl. I felt instantly not alone when Jessica spoke of the invisible girls and boys. Thank you for using your voice and not running away from this subject. It takes tremendous courage and strength to find your voice and to choose to keep on the path of healing. Unspeakable is a must read.

Unbelievable story of survival and triumph!

I just listened to this book on a road trip. It is a tough story to hear and even harder to hear it narrated by the main victim. I couldn’t stop listening and had to hear the whole story. Jessica does an amazing job describing her very tough family life and the many unspeakable things her and her siblings endured for years. She is a survivor and there are some really good people in this world despite what she went through. Listen, cry, endure, and eventually smile for this great story of survival. Share it with others so this story can continue to help those dealing with similar situations.

Powerful!

This is such a powerful story of truth and the resilience that Jessica has shown is inspiring. Although my story is different and not nearly as intense, some of the feelings and emotions I experienced were eerily similar. Growing up and enduring an angry, controlling and abusive father and later a husband I can relate and empathize with the fears, emotions and struggles. Growing up with a strong faith in God and His Word and at the same time being very controlled and abused by those who were the ones to claim leadership and authority over my life in God’s name was one of the very reasons I suffered and I stayed so long. I struggled to “do right, do better” after all it must be me right? The pathway out from under oppressive and abusive control was terrifying and soul crushing, especially when it seemed to be linked with a personal walk with God. It is always deeply touching to see and hear about a survivor that has walked through the fire and come out on the other side standing strong and sharing their story of hope and healing. Thank you. Your story and your strength will help so many.
