About this listen

The life and work of the legendary "Pope of Voodoo", Marie Laveau - a free woman of color who practically ruled New Orleans in the mid-1800s

Marie Laveau may be the most influential American practitioner of the magical arts; certainly, she is among the most famous. She is the subject of songs, films, and legends and the star of New Orleans ghost tours. Her grave in New Orleans ranks among the most popular spiritual pilgrimages in the US. Devotees venerate votive images of Laveau, who proclaimed herself the "Pope of Voodoo." She is the subject of respected historical biographies and the inspiration for novels by Francine Prose and Jewell Parker Rhodes. She even appears in Marvel Comics and on the television show American Horror Story: Coven, where she was portrayed by Angela Bassett.

Author Denise Alvarado explores Marie Laveau's life and work - the fascinating history and mystery. This book gives an overview of New Orleans Voodoo, its origins, history, and practices. It contains spells, prayers, rituals, recipes, and instructions for constructing New Orleans voodoo-style altars and crafting a voodoo amulet known as a gris-gris.

The Spells And Conjures Are Eye Opening

I’ve heard of Marie Laveau but didn’t know about her. The author Denise Alvarado did a wonderful job explaining the life of Marie Laveau and the difference between her and her daughter. I am going to purchase the paper book after listening to the audio version. The narrator Andenrele Ojo’s voice was pleasant to listen to throughout the entire audio book.

Love

This author not only tell the history correctly but she also points out how this amazing woman would relate to society and its problems in our present day world. Marie was not a the myth many people believe her time be she was a real person who was devoted to helping people and serving her community in a positive way throughout her life Well written a great read!!

Enlightening . Esoteric. Comprehensive.

If you are merely looking for a story about Marie Laveau with some historical references, this book is not for you. This story dives much deeper than the average story teller can do. I will admit it was a hard book to solely listen to with having so much information coming through the narrator that at times I felt I needed to stop to re-listen and take notes. Being a visual person, this would have been easier to read than to listen to, albeit much longer. At first it was rough but it definitely grew on me with the more fact checking and articles having been brought up from past witnesses. I enjoyed the thoroughness of the author hoping to shine a light into Marie Laveau’s complex life while also taking in the side of what people have witnessed. I came into this book looking for a simple story only to find that this very real woman is too complex to have one story. From a mystical legend as the New Orleans Voodoo Queen and devout Catholic to a savvy business woman within the Creole wealthy society all while making history as a black woman in the antebellum south. I was also impressed with the narrators ability of pronouncing French as well as African and other cultures words to which I was not familiar with. Overall I still would not recommend to those who would not read a how to style book nor appreciate historical texts.
