About this listen

Voodoo hoodoo is the unique variety of Creole voodoo found in New Orleans. This rich compendium includes more than 300 authentic voodoo and hoodoo recipes, rituals, and spells for love, justice, luck, prosperity, health, and success. Cultural psychologist and root worker Denise Alvarado, who grew up in New Orleans, draws from a lifetime of recipes and spells learned from family, friends, and local practitioners. She traces the history of the African-based folk magic brought by slaves to New Orleans, showing how it evolved over time to include influences from Native-American spirituality, Catholicism, and Pentecostalism. She shares her research into folklore collections and 19th- and 20th-century formularies along with her own magical arts. The Voodoo Hoodoo Spellbook includes more than 100 spells for banishing, binding, fertility, luck, protection, money, and more. Alvarado introduces listeners to the pantheon of voodoo spirits, the seven African powers, and other important loas, prayers, novenas, and psalms, and much, much more:

  • Oils and potions: attraction love oil, dream potion, gambler's luck oil, blessing oil
  • Hoodoo powders and gris gris: Algier's fast luck powder, controlling powder, money drawing powder
  • Talismans and candle magic
  • Curses and hexes

I really wish I could give 5 stars

This book is chock full of great information. I like the history Denise gives on the practise of Hoodoo, the way she lays out the various Saints, Lwa, Orisha, and the few American Indian folk Saints, the herbs, crystals, and many many tools used in this tradition. This would be a great beginners book for someone that may not yet have an elder to learn from.

I'm about 6 hours in and was enjoying the book until she began telling people how to do a spell to "make your woman sexually interested in you." I take issue with stuff like this because to me it can, and most certainly will, be used irresponsibly by people who have no idea what they are doing or simply do not care about the boundaries of others. It felt tantamount to r@pe. Denise is not the first author I have heard give out a spell like this, but I REALLY wish people would be more mindful of what they make public. That should have been one spell to keep under wraps and only given to a client if the situation called for it, and of course with the woman's consent.

Denise Alvarado is a wonderful author and I do love her books. Just please, for all my occult writers, take care what you put out. You could be giving someone a loaded weapon they don't respect.
