About this listen

The truth is rarely simple.

London 1884. Victorian industrialist Alexander Glenville is a man with many secrets. Fleet Street reporter Penny Green is tasked with working undercover as a maid in his home, but tragedy strikes when Glenville's daughter is poisoned.

Penny's insider knowledge is crucial for Scotland Yard's murder investigation, but someone in the Glenville household already suspects that she's more than just a servant. Can Penny and Inspector James Blakely solve the mystery before Penny's cover is blown?

I have really enjoyed this series. Good historical mysteries and generally well narrated. The different characters have different accents. But several also seem to have bad lisps and that is making it hard to listen to. If this was my first title in the series I think I would give up on the audible version and just read it

Good story - a bit of a struggle with the narration

AS USUAL A REFRESHING Take on a mystery with very critical character studies. The only drawback was the Lady Reporters inability to get over her fascination and infatuation with the two leading male characters and get on with the plot.
Her descriptions of Victorian life are historically informative and worded interestingly. I am excited to continue on with the series.

Mystery Servant

I thought the main character was going to be smart and strong but wavered between smart and stupid/weak at times.

Kept my interest

I enjoyed the first two better. Am not fond of someone trying to wrangle a man away from his betrothed but can deal with it for a good story. Narrator is good in some ways and awkward in other ways, like giving several characters a lisp. In general a decent listen, and I’ll probably try another one in the future.

Pretty good

I loved the spin on this book with Penny being undercover. I love that each mystery has been different and does not repeat a pattern. I think this is my favorite because it started off in the middle of a murder, we didn't have to wait to see some action. And there is more tension/development between Penny and James. I love how historical these mysteries are, very well written. Just buy it already!
