About this listen

Dr. Louann Brizendine, the founder of the first clinic in the country to study gender differences in brain, behavior, and hormones, turns her attention to the male brain, showing how, through every phase of life, the "male reality" is fundamentally different from the female one. Exploring the latest breakthroughs in male psychology and neurology with her trademark accessibility and candor, she reveals that the male brain:

  • is a lean, mean, problem-solving machine. Faced with a personal problem, a man will use his analytical brain structures, not his emotional ones, to find a solution.
  • thrives under competition, instinctively plays rough and is obsessed with rank and hierarchy.
  • has an area for sexual pursuit that is 2.5 times larger than the female brain, consuming him with sexual fantasies about female body parts.
  • experiences such a massive increase in testosterone at puberty that he perceive others' faces to be more aggressive.

The Male Brain finally overturns the stereotypes. Impeccably researched and at the cutting edge of scientific knowledge, this is a book that every man, and especially every woman bedeviled by a man, will need to own.

This book should be required reading, especially for people in their 20s and 30s. I love books like this. They tell you what's up, and you decide how you feel about it, and what to do or not do with the information.

Brilliant book!!!

The human male condition beautifully explained. Stages of male development from infancy to mature adulthood are outlined and accompany anecdotes. Hormones more than genes, and socialization are attributed to various male behaviors. Although some scientific studies were mentioned, it would have been nice to hear about more studies that suppprt the conclusions about the various stages of development and hormone functions/circuits. It would also be nice to know how well these findings/conclusions/archetypes apply across (non western) cultures. I will share this book and look for more on this topic.

Should be required reading in HS and college

Following on from "The female brain", Brizendine explores the male brain, and does it with the same easy prose, compassion, respect and scientific rigor. One of the best books I've listened to lately.

Excellent book. Will change how you think about li

So much helpful information and clear, concise descriptions to help the reader/listener follow along. This book helped me understand things that have been confusing about men my whole life, and has given me information to use moving forward. Definitely worth the listen!

Enlightening & Enjoyable

As a female whose been chronically frustrated by the men in her life; this book met me at the perfect time in my life. I can let go of the unrealistic expectations for men to be more like women… they just aren’t and this book helped me see that.

Refreshing and Full of Science

l am a 68 year old retired male. Always intrested in the 'why' people are the way they are. Read both books when they first came out. Understood the Male Brain more than the Female Brain. (Understandable). Could identify with most of the Male Brain. Was married for 31 years, then divorced ((amicably) younger spouse's request; 10 year age defference) at age 62. We have two daughters & two granddaughters. One (the first) that is married and does not like father's conservative views. The youngest was never married; she (31) and her two amazing daughters are currently living with me. I can not definitively say the books could have worked for us; however, not realizing this information is detrimental in the current sexual/politecal revolution. My background is in physics (USAF Missile Guidance & Control Systems, and Computer Technology); 30 years. Avocation: Theology/Sociology/Philosophy (Eastern and Western); 50+ years.
Knowledge is never out of style...!

WORTHWHILE!

I am a woman, and I liked The Male Brain more than the book The Female Brain. For me as a woman, I like that this psychiatrist says that daily masturbation is normal; that is something that I felt I needed to hide before I heard this book. Unfortunately, this book does not cover a subject that I find fascinating: genius men. Genius men often are not alpha males, athletic, or strong, but they did much to benefit the human species. This book is more about "primitive, animalistic" male traits. Supposedly Isaac Newton died a virgin, so although he was not successful at procreation, he did much to contribute to humankind. And men, don't worry about establishing hierarchy by rough-housing; I doubt that Bill Gates was much of an athletic jock. I would like a book on gay and transgender brains.

Liked more than Female Brain

I learned so much new information .
bravo. I passed it on two friends quickly. The older age empty nest chapter was amazingly correct. My Psychology Professor recommended this book, as well as The Female Brain.

A definite eye opener!!

First of all, this book is entertaining and easy to follow.
I devoured this book in record time: I was actively looking for excuses to keep listening.
The insights into so many of the auto-pilot mechanisms of our own brain are no doubt powerful. It is a different kind of mindfulness, the one that allows you to be aware of where your brain will try to lead you, depending on the circumstances and your age. It works.
It's also a bit reassuring to know that there are still some experts that won't discard the male brain as simple, but actually take an interest and study it.
For the aforementioned reasons, I am now more than motivated to launch myself into the devouring of the other book, about the female brain.

Powerful insight
