About this listen

Laurie R. King takes listeners way back in her best-selling series with this audiobook short story, as Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes embark upon the riskiest adventure of their partnership: their wedding.

Though she cannot entirely discount the effects of the head injuries they were both suffering at the time, Mary Russell is delighted by Sherlock Holmes' proposal of marriage. After all, they have become partners in crime, and she has recently come into her inheritance: What remains but to confirm the union with her mentor-turned-partner with the piece of paper?

Russell's pragmatic side tells her to head straight to the registry office - until Holmes surprises her with a sentimental wish to be married in the chapel of his ancestral manor. There's just the small issue of ownership: The house is not exactly his, and he is most definitely not welcome there. Of course, such obstacles have never deterred Sherlock Holmes before, and they certainly won't keep him from concocting an elaborate scheme to evade angry dogs and armed butlers - all in the name of wedded bliss.

I loved this sweet short! Full of fun, but true to the L.R.K. characters I've come to love. As always, J. S. does a fabulous job bringing the characters to life.

Definitely written to please the completist - who having read other tales of Russell and Holmes will enjoy this episode and the emotional nuance it adds to the characters. Expertly adapted to the canon, as one can expect from LR King, with a few well considered additions.

A pleasure for the completist

Yes finally! The extremely fitting, well written, well read, companion novel. It bridges the gap, the missing piece of the puzzle, of Sherlock and Mary.

Extraordinary Beginning well fitting!

What made the experience of listening to The Marriage of Mary Russell the most enjoyable?

I often listen as I work in the garden, but I found myself listeninf and not gardening. This story filled in some of the early history.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Marriage of Mary Russell?

The scene in the crypt after the ceremony.

Which scene was your favorite?

The same - the crypt after the ceremony.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No a laugh of cry moment but knowing the lengths that the legendary detective would go to make his future bride happy.

A Bit of Backstory

What a delightful side story to the Russell-Holmes series. Fun to see them not being chased by all the “bad guys”.

That fills in some of the missing pieces in the early Holmes-Russell marriage. as usual Jenny Sterling's rich voice has added to the mix, and the melange of characters is delightful. More insight into Mrs Hudson and Mycroft, too.

My only complaint, as usual with a Holmes-Russell tale is that it ends too soon

A lovely little tale
