About this listen

Warwickshire, 1840s: boys are destined for the pit and girls for the mill. Despite this, Maryann is happy there - until her mother dies. Her family collapses, leaving Maryann exhausted, and Toby, the boy she is set on marrying, insists they wait.

Then Maryann is offered a position as nanny to the daughter of the mill owner, Wesley Marshall, who Maryann grows unexpectedly close to. But their relationship doesn’t go unnoticed, threatening to unleash a world of problems on them all....

Most enjoyable audio book.

I really enjoyed this book. It is set in the Englitsh Midlands in the 1800s when children and adults worked long hours in the mill or mine for. low wages. Fortunate to be part of a happy though poor family, Marianne 's strong character comes to the fore when an incident at the mill sets her on a path that will change her life. She is presented with many challenges as the story progresses and will need every ounce of courage she possesses. I absolutely loved the narration by Charie Sanderson. She has a real gift for storytelling and her ability to use regional accents is so good. She certainly did justice to Rosie Goodwin 's lovely book.

Loved it!

A great read! The book was very engaging and I would love to hear more about the characters in a sequel.
