About this listen

From the million-copy bestselling author of The Lost Bookshop

Nestled among the cobblestone streets of Compiègne, there existed a bakery unlike any other.

Rumours were whispered through the town that its pastries offered a taste of magic, chasing away the darkest of sorrows. Just one bite of a croissant might bring luck, unlock a precious memory or reveal hidden longings.

But dark clouds were looming on the horizon…

For Edie Lane, a recipe for disaster doesn’t require that many ingredients. Take an unhealthy amount of wishful thinking and a sprinkle of desperation and that’s how Edie left everything behind in Ireland for her dream job at a bakery in Paris. Except the bakery isn’t in Paris – and neither is Edie.

This might not be where Edie intended to be but she soon realizes it's exactly where she needs to be…

I enjoyed going on the main character’s brave journey after she takes the trusting step of moving to France from Ireland to work at a bakery and find herself. Interwoven into the tale is an unsolved mystery of the goings on in the bakery’s basement, an appealing slow romance, and an inspiring growth arch for various characters. Nice local and historical details! Slow start but picks up nicely. Recommended!

A delightful mystery/romance with a French twist

I was pretty sure that this book would make want to plan a trip to Paris. I was wrong, it made me want to visit the historic towns outside of Paris! I LOVED the author & the reader from past books! A lovely story about love, history, baking, kindness & humanity! Although a slightly predictable storyline it was Just what I needed this month. like a warm baguette!
Definitely recommend!

A beautifully written and narrated story. This story grabbed me from the start and left me wanting for more. Evie Woods is masterful in her historical stories, and the way in which she writes you can actually feel like you’re there.
I felt like I could actually taste and smell all the amazing goodness this bakery offered.
And could imagine the feelings and memories the hot chocolate created. My mouth was watering.
Overall a lovely and magical story.

The magic of taking a chance!

Very magical, sweet, and engaging. I loved the feeling that Edith’s experiences mimicked personal feelings I’ve felt.

I have enjoyed the other books by this author, so I was excited to read this. Although I enjoyed her other books more, this one was still good. I liked how she brought in some history of WWII and the Roma people. I also liked the descriptions of the French town where it takes place. The narrator was not my favorite. I didn’t always like how she read the main character. It made it hard to connect with her and see what kind of person she really was. Still a good story and a nice listen!

Enjoyed this story

While this novel is not “deep,” it is truly charming. The characters and storyline come together in a beautiful way to tell a tale of finding yourself in unexpected ways, losing yourself in the unknown and taking chances and giving in to your dreams.

The narrator was fantastic too!

A charming story!
