About this listen

Helen Kent never dares to step outside her comfort zone. She lives a lonely, mundane life in the city, grinding through her uninspiring marketing job. That is, until a spontaneous online purchase brings her to the little bay town of Oban, Scotland, where a 500-year-old cottage full of secrets and stories awaits her.

After Helen unearths the local legend of a 16th-century witch, she discovers a set of mysterious journals in the cottage’s library. Thrust into a world of magic she doesn’t understand, she soon realizes there are both light and dark forces at work beyond her control.

With the help of a dashing Scottish neighbor and his wise grandfather, Helen discovers the link that connects her to the mysterious events unfolding at the cottage. But when the past collides with the present, she must face her fears and fight for what she believes in—that is if she hopes to unravel the mystery of Fernbeg cottage before darkness descends, again.

Very enjoyable story

I look forward to hearing more from Jessica Dodge! A charming story that transports the reader/listener to the farms, fields & lochs surrounding Oban, Scotland. I have a vivid image of the stone cottage & its library drawn so beautifully described in this book. I also enjoyed the herbal lore in throughout the story. More please!

Couldn’t wait for my drive to work!

This book had me excited for my drive to work so that I could listen to more! Helen is so endearing and I was rooting for her happiness right from the start. Jessica really brings magic alive. The story and narrator had me drawn in and believing I was right in Scotland in a little cottage by a cozy fire with all the characters. Please write more, I’ll be not so patiently waiting.

Almost, but no.

The idea of the story was good, but the execution not so much. There was simply too many ideas jammed into this book. The whole book seemed more like an outline of ideas thaat were never properly developed and we just bounced along as quickly as possible from one to the next.
The narration was also pretty blah. The whole story was read in a monotone voice, no distinction between characters, no emotion whatsoever. I use assistive reading in my kindle app which will narrate using AI voices, and I would say this narrator was about as lively as those robot voices.

Very much enjoyed this book!

I really enjoyed this story and the imagery. Thought the story was well done and certainly interesting. Love the idea of the journals spanning centuries. I enjoyed the narration and the sound of narrators voice. Although I agree with others that stated the narrator could use more small pauses in between characters and around punctuation. Overall, I loved this story; related to several things within the book and will read more from this author.

Good story, narrator needs work

Enjoyed the story, but ended up reading most of the book as the narrator read as if she was reading to children, no inflection or excitement when called for.

Cozy and comforting

I loved this story! It was beautifully written. Easy to connect with characters, fairy tale witchy vibes, immersive world building with a cottagecore ambiance. It had The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue and Discovery of Witches feels and I adored the narrator.
