Publisher's summary

A thrilling story of murder and betrayal filled with the scandal, wit and intrigue characteristic of Austen’s classic novels.

Fitzwilliam Darcy is devastated. The joy of his recent wedding has been cut short by the news of the sudden death of his father’s beloved cousin, Samuel Darcy. Elizabeth and Darcy travel to Dorset, a popular Regency resort area, to pay their respects to the well-traveled and eccentric Samuel. But this is no summer holiday. Danger bubbles beneath Dorset’s peaceful surface as strange and foreboding events begin to occur. Several of Samuel’s ancient treasures go missing, and then his body itself disappears. As Darcy and Elizabeth investigate this mystery and unravel its tangled ties to the haunting legends of Dark Dorset, the legendary couple’s love is put to the test when sinister forces strike close to home. Some secrets should remain secrets, but Darcy will do all he can to find answers even if it means meeting his own end in the damp depths of a newly dug grave.

With malicious villains, dramatic revelations and heroic gestures, The Mysterious Death of Mr. Darcy will keep Austen fans listening right up until its dramatic conclusion.

Too ponderous

Just too many twists and turns. Too many times where actions made no sense. Darcy has a pistol which he didn’t use. Twice.

Plot turns that don’t make sense. The story just dragged. Stilted language. Why would Elizabeth willingly walk off with the villain?

Really good story

I thoroughly enjoyed this story. Well written and detailed. Lots of angsty bits but no more than you can stand. Good plot. I highly recommend this book to a Jane Austen fan fiction lover.

A multi level mystery

This book is a multi level mystery surrounding the mysterious death of Mr Darcy. The Darcy’s travel to their uncle’s estate thinking they would sightsee while they waited for the will to be read.
There are so many mysterious circles that put the Darcy’s in danger. Colonel Fitzwilliam arrived with help to help discover what has happened.
The narrator was awesome.

a bit juvenile

The dialog in this book is distractingly smarmy. Too much of "I love you. You're my life." It was repeated over and over throughout the book, taking up way too much of the reader's time.

Very disappointing

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Nothing. The interaction between Elizabeth and Fitzwilliam Darcy was just awful

Has The Mysterious Death of Mr. Darcy turned you off from other books in this genre?

No, just other books in what appears to be a potential series

What does Jane Copland bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

In book form or audiobook, the constant professions of love between Darcy and Elizabeth would turn anyone off. I left the book for a couple of weeks, but the thoughts of going back to listen to it made me ill. Hated it. The mystery was viable, the dialogue between these two characters was sickening. I bought this book because Pride and Prejudice was my favourite book of all time and Lizzy and Darcy my favourite characters. I gave this book every chance for that reason. If the mystery had been more compelling I might have been able to tune out the contact professions of undying love, but maybe not. Remove those professions of love and this book might only be an hour long.

What character would you cut from The Mysterious Death of Mr. Darcy?

Elizabeth and Darcy.

Any additional comments?

I can only hope that if this is a series, Elizabeth and Darcy get over the glow of love and start interacting like normal people in that era.

The author really got off track.

I struggled to finish this one. Jeffers racked up a ridiculous body count, cliche ramblings and unnecessary twists that were just boring. I admit to fast forwarding through several scenes.
