Publisher's summary

Who is the villainous Lord K? New York Times bestselling author Lorraine Heath’s next novel in The Chessmen: Masters of Seduction series where revenge is best served hot…

A scandalous book by an anonymous author takes London by storm, and everyone is convinced its villainous “Lord K” is the greatly admired Earl of Knightly. Heartbroken that he left her at the altar, Miss Regina Leyland impulsively sought revenge by revealing the true Knightly to the world but never expected the uproar to bring enemies to her door. To keep her identity hidden, she must trust the one man with the power to destroy her.

Furious to be the object of notoriety and gossip, Knightly confronts the lady he suspects of penning the tome only to discover she is no longer the naïve innocent he was forced to betray, but a woman of strength and conviction, who will bow before no man.

Knightly and Regina pretend a reconciliation to salvage their reputations and throw the ton off their scent. But false friendship soon turns to powerful passion. When truths emerge, threatening all they hold dear, they must face the consequences of their past if their story is ever to deserve its happily ever after.

The reading of it.

The story was unique. The switching of time spans was confusing at 1st. The full characters were absorbing.

Lovely story, interesting characters

Oh how I love a good love story and this was one of the best. The characters were strong and engaging. Thanks to Kate Reading's voice and portrayal of the characters, the listener is pulled in from the very beginning. Lorraine Heath is one of my favorite romance writers and she delivered another favorite book. Thank you ladies, for another great listen.

An unimaginable choice....with a happy ending

Kate Reading...BRILLIANT performance as always.
Knight & Regina are MAGIC. I loved this book...it had me hooked from the start. I wish it had been longer because I hated the story to end.

Oh Did She Hate What He Did

Oh Did Regina hate what Knightly did, and wanted to punish him without knowing all of the facts. However, this was such a great second chance romance once she knew why he jilted her at the altar. I understood why she kept her secret too, and it was a beautiful romance even when it was frustrating at times.

10 out of 10

This series has not disappointed. I loved the memoir readings. They were steamy and sensual without being overly sexual. Loretta’s prose NEVER fails to leave me enraptured. So far this is been one of the best theories I’ve read, and I look forward to the next one. This story has a lot of time hopping. It probably makes sense in the book, but caught me off guard a few times while listening. However, it does not take away from this book in the slightest. It’s basically giving us a backstory of what happened to the couple and how they got to where they are. It was very well done. All in all I enjoyed how complete this story was.

better than I could have imagined!

although it's full of angst we got to spend a satisfying amount of time with the couple being happily together building their futures and then made this a very excellent read for me. I honestly didn't know how Ms. Heath was going to pull off another wonderfully unique Chessman story and she certainly has. Guess that's why she's a writer and I'm not.
Of course, Kate Reading is one of the very best performers and just keeps getting better with each book. A master of her craft in every way. I'm so glad she narrates this book and so many of my favorite books.

Worth the Waiting

I have been waiting impatiently for this story to be released ever since I began the series of the chessmen . I loved the story line and of course the narrator is one of my favorites. Looking forward to rooks’s story next.

Emotional and thought provoking

I loved this story of Regina and Knightly finding their ways back to each other after an epic betrayal. Regina’s anger at Knightly is palpable and well-earned, yet she cannot seem to resist him once he walks back into her life. Her impulsively written anonymous memoir was meant as revenge but instead propels them back towards each other, while threatening to upend the stable life she is trying to build for her future. The depiction of the public outcry against her “indecent” book is very timely in light of the current calls for banning books and other media that some people consider too controversial. Heath makes a compelling argument for shining a light on matters of sex and sexuality rather than treating them with shame.
