About this listen

In this ambitious audiobook, best-selling author Sanjeev Sanyal chronicles the grand sweep of history from East Africa to Australia, conjuring the great cities of Angkor and Vijayanagar, medieval Arab empires, and Chinese "treasure fleets" in rich, vivid detail. He explores remote archaeological sites, maritime trading networks, and half-forgotten oral tales to challenge established historical narratives with fresh evidence.

Shining new light on medieval geopolitics and long-lost cities, The Ocean of Churn is a mesmerizing journey into the heart of a vibrant civilization.

I’m used to listening to history written by Europeans and Americans, so this book opened my eyes to a different perspective. Initially my western ears took a bit of tuning-in to the narrator’s voice and style, but I felt that the Indian accent and pronunciation brought an authenticity that made the listen more rewarding than listening to a voice of someone from outside the region. The book itself was very broad and could only touch on many aspects of the history, but it was a great intro to a very big region.

Interesting perspective

Amazing book. I even got the physical copy. This is a must read & must listen. Can definitely be made into a Netflix or Prime docu-history show.

A true eye opener for me. Not once It got boring or dull. Feeling sick about how British empire raped civilized worlds.

Amazing Book!!

The book is adventurous, honest and brave. Although it didn’t labour the points but it does makes you wonder about unilateral absolute truths that we hold so dear to us as a rock of certainty in our tumultuous times. The cyclical and templated nature of history is striking to see unfolding and a little saddening to be honest.
Great reading and I look forward to more books from the respected author.

Fascinating, honest and truly adds to knowledge

Great book and I wish I had been taught history this way. I’ve been listening to this book on my drive to drop off and pick up my 3.5 yr old daughter and I have been narrating a simplified version of this book to her!

It also challenges the seemingly half truths about Ashoka, Tipu sultan, Rhodes etc.

Makes me love history once again!
