About this listen

He only wanted to build a plaything - a small, simple device born of innate curiosity and a fascination of things mechanical. Scavenging parts and repurposing components, a country gunsmith assembles what is supposed to be a conversation piece - a trinket to show his friends... a toy really... a small rail gun.

The invention is so much more. After nearly destroying his West Texas shop, Dusty realizes he has stumbled upon science that could alter the future of mankind. The size and shape of a common rifle, his device is capable of producing unimaginable power. The simple, gentleman rancher is faced with a dilemma of the ages - thesurvival of the human race. The resulting technology can produce limitless, clean energy, or if used as a weapon, inconceivable destruction.

Nothing so monumental stays secret for long. Powerful men and desperate governments learn of the discovery, and it quickly becomes evident that whoever wields the rail gun can dominate the entire planet.

Decent story, mediocre narrator

The book and it's premise were decent enough. Story line and characters were entertaining and relatively believable.

Unfortunately the narration sucked.

Many if the voices sounded similar and forced. I have to wonder what happened to the post production work because there were many instances of actually hearing the narrator breathe/wheeze to the point of being distracting. At times it was practically like being in the room with an asthmatic smoker!

Tip to the narrator - if you're going to read a story heavily centered around the gun culture and other technology aspects, you REALLY should be able to pronounce the words correctly. It wasn't just gun references either, there were numerous mispronounciations and fumbles where it could possibly have been poor editing of the text, but more likely based on the rest of the performance it was simply the wrong (but similar) word being read. I really expect more from a professional performance and to be completely honest there were a number of times that I nearly quit the book due solely to the narration.

Enjoyable story.

Enjoyed listening to Olympus device. Very good, and fast paced especially as the end approaches. Stands up for the right on the individual

Not what I was expecting

I enjoyed the authors other series, and took this as a recommendation. Like mike Gurdy's voice for men. But was jarred by the female voices. After listening for a few min, I stopped and now several years later started all over. Once I got past chapter 1. I realized what a great story the author had created and it filled every fee moment in time. I finished it in 2 days.

Suffers from sound issues..

The narration is so so, sadly the recording seems to suffer from several sound issues. Words cut of mid sound and other glitches that together with the odd pace of the reading can be annoying when considering the accumulation.

It would be a great movie

Most interesting, I read the book first then downloaded the audio version and have enjoyed both very much. I like the sudo-science, along with the true science. Along with what our beloved fed gov would do to the person who held this device. All and all you'll enjoy the book.

Such Potential....but fell short (DARN IT!!)

How could the performance have been better?

Without question...better narration!! Although the story had many parts that seemed to go on and on, a good narrator might very well have been able to keep the listener's attention. The production aspect was very poor.

Any additional comments?

The story had great potential...a little help with editing and a good narrator could very well have hit a home run with this one.Btw...."Lapua" is pronounced "La-poo-a"...not "Lapwa". :-( an example of what the production staff (& narrator) SHOULD NOT have missed as most people who listen to this genre will immediately tune out.

Only worth it if you like stupid government workers

The narrator was great but the plot is just to negatives or my tastes. And the main characters are simply too trusting of what is shown to them.

Joe Nobody - A whack job anti government nut...

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Rugged anti government militia men.

Would you ever listen to anything by Joe Nobody again?

Only if forced to at gunpoint

What didn’t you like about Mike Gurdy’s performance?

Mike Gurdy sounded like he had some kind of terrible respiratory disease. It eventually became comical listening to his random, mid-sentence pauses while he was gasping for, air.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Olympus Device, Book One?

I would cut the whole book and use it to help start my fire pit.

Any additional comments?

I really feel stupid for, forcing myself to listen to this whole story.

Very Disapointed - Poorly executed

What would have made The Olympus Device, Book One better?

Better, more extensive character development. Fewer right-wing speeches.

What was most disappointing about Joe Nobody’s story?

Plot – Interesting premise, but unfortunately, it was very poorly executed.

Narrator – Should have taken more time working out the voices of the individual characters.

Characters – Characters were one-dimensional and cartoon-ish.

Author – Author spent little time on character development and their motivation for doing what they were doing. Far too much time was spent on making speeches….that made little sense.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Too many characters sounded the same.Too many males with a gruff, gravelly voices. Narrator wasn't consistent in their pronunciation (ex, Sergei vs. "Ser-Gee").

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Olympus Device, Book One?

All of the anti-government diatribes. Author took little to explain why his characters did what they did and felt the way they do.In the end they just all came off as "cartoons characters",
