About this listen

After a brief and deadly civil war, in which forbidden weapons were used, Russia is just a fraction of what it used to be. The border of what now proudly calls itself the "Moscow Empire" is set just a few hundred miles away from the capital, by the broad river Volga, now poisoned by the fallout. For years, nobody has come from the other side of the bridge. Until now...

As a huge fan of Metro 2033 I always look out for anything the author puts out and this left me disappointed. The idea of the move is interesting but sadly it’s just kind of dull, it’s incredibly slow and spends a long time talking about the characters who are usually whiny brats and not interesting to read about and whenever it does branch away from the whiny main character it shows some interesting and promising conflicts and moments but they are few and far between. Ultimately pretty disappointing.

A dull slog

the book is very slow drama for the most part and builds mystery as it goes. but the best of the novel comes at the end. not as good as his metro series but i did enjoy the story

very slow but horrifying towards the end

Glukhovsky's knack for writing in a way that makes you anxious and grips you is on full display here. The pace of the story is slow, but the feeling of something not quite being right increases steadily throughout the entire story until it all explodes at once. Don't go into it expecting Metro, the characters and setting are very different but if you enjoy Glukhovsky's writing style, you'll like this one.

Unsettling and intriguing.

Could barely put it down. Love Gluhkovsky’s style, and this didn’t disappoint. Creepy story. Takes a while to get going, as others have said, but the book is pretty short so it’s hard to consider that a sin.

Performance was great as well. As much as I miss the Russian accents from the Metro audiobooks, the different voices were well done! (Polkan was my favorite and without the voice I don’t know if I would’ve loved him as a character as much).

Can’t wait until the next one is out in English!

The voice actor was great with little details that sell the characters. The story is slow and somewhat boring before things pick up. But, once the ball gets rolling it's very exciting and depressing. If you liked Metro, you will like this.

Slow Buildup Big Ending

this is pretty dialogue heavy and doesn't take off until near the end. I hope there's more coming

a slow burn

It took a long time to necessarily grip me, but it seems this is going to be a series, so that is natural, but such a unique plot with an incredibly explosive payoff, incredible listen.

Slow burn but absolutely worth it

great atmosphere,
great start to this series of books.

another post apocalyptic masterpiece

someone should tell him that the verb "cry" doesn't have to mean actually crying and whining. It can be synonymous to shout. I hate to hear him read something that used the phrase "war cry".

The voice actor ruined it

Five of ten hours in and nothing memorable has happened. Entire book could have been condensed to a Metro: Exodus cut scene. But it’s not Metro. It’s not S.T.A.L.K.E.R. It’s just boring. Save your credit

Should’ve been a novella
