Publisher's summary

In 525 BC, the Persian king Cambyses sent 50,000 soldiers across the conquered Egyptian desert to take an oasis city not far from where the Libyan border stands today. According to Greek history, a hurricane-force sandstorm struck near the end of their 600-mile trek. The army - all 50,000 men - vanished without a single trace.

Fast forward to 1986. A British archaeological team, sent to the edge of the Great Sand Sea to exhume evidence of the incident, has also gone missing. So the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense is sending the world's greatest paranormal investigator, Hellboy, to find the missing Brits and to discover what became of The Lost Army.

I forgot how dark the novels are

Great story, I just forgot how dark and edgy the novels are verses the movies and cartoons. Loved the wellspring of history and mystery that makes the Hellboy books the amazing stories that they are. Great narration and fast paced.

Like watching the movie for the first time!!

it was so awesome!! I love getting to experience more of Hellboy's adventures, I can't wait to listen to more of these books! Every character felt like thier own universe and made the story something special.

Didn't hate it, didn't love it.

Performance first:

I don't dislike the narrator, I think he did great with all the other voices; but not Hellboy's. It reminded me of Joe from family guy.

As for the story, I struggled through 2/3rds of it. The mystery was interesting, execution was meh.

Overall, it was bland.

Good but could be better.

The book in my opinion is well written. But the narration makes the book drag on.

You can make it through…

The story and overall were fantastic. The narrator captures a good version of HB’s voice and most others, but, wow, is the female protagonist’s voice just awful. Not sure what the accent or dialect is supposed to be, but it ain’t near correct…

Still, it’s a good listen. Does Mignola right.

Lost Army, Lost Interest

Having just finished Matt Ruff’s “Lovecraft Country”, which I really enjoyed, I was searching for something similar in subject and tone when I wondered if there were any Hellboy books on here. I love Hellboy and Mike Mignola’s work so I was excited to give this a try, even knowing this was written by Christopher Golden and not Mignola himself. What I found was sadly not what I had hoped for.

Pros:
Hellboy

Cons: A forgettable story, so-so writing that peaks at mediocre, and grating narration that was so bad I would have bailed on the book early on if I weren’t a completionist and held out hope of the story and performance improving.

I really wanted to love this — love it enough to get the subsequent books immediately after finishing it — but having seen the same writer and narrator are on several of the other audio books, I might have to just skip those and try the other books.

Thoroughly Enjoyed

Engaging story with imaginative descriptions which easily painted the scenes in my mind. I look forward to listening to the others!

Pretty Good

This was an experiment with the audio comic book thing and it was cool. I was mad that it ended. I think the narration could have been better with the voices, but i don't think i would have done better.
