About this listen

For too long had the Vth Legion ranged out beyond the sight of the wider Imperium, remaining ignorant of the Warmaster's rebellion and the war that inevitably followed.

Only once their primarch, Jaghatai Khan, had satisfied himself that the path before them was just and true did the White Scars choose a side, taking the fight to the traitors on every front. But, four years later, the Legion's unfettered spirit has been broken by relentless attritional warfare against the Death Guard and the Emperor's Children - the Khan's Stormseers must find a clear route to Terra if they are to take part in the final, apocalyptic battle.

Excellent story

This book is my favorite Warhammer story, and the performance was perfection itself. Incredible action, tightly plotted story, superb characters.

only 1 issue

The only problem was the narrator struggling to separate space wolf and white scar accents while speaking. Not a huge problem though.

Narration Was a Let Down

Idk what was going on with Chris. I've listened to a few other books he narrated, and they were all fine. This time his performance was a big let down. MANY of the characters sound exactly the same and more than a few scenes with them all talking together.

Beyond the narration, the story was good overall. A few extremely odd descriptions of things, but I don't really get hung up over stuff like that.

If you're listening through the HH series, this book was one of the good ones. Not great, but good.

Not skippable

great listen, slow start with a strong ending. Tells a lot about the white scars and leads into their next part in the story

Got better as it went

Started slow and slog again but this one really pulled together towards the climax and added valuable information regarding several topics. I accept this book as a B+

White Scars continuation

Another solid book that does a great job at filling in the storyline of the white scars. Informs you on how they end up where they need to be.

The Art of Laughing Lightning

Chris Wraight has made me a full convert to the White Scars. This book is also a great example of scale creep done right. The battles are bigger, the plot is more complex, the story threads more numerous and spread apart, and the characters introduced in the previous book "Scars" are placed into the pressure cooker to see what deeper characterization comes of it. This is standard operating procedure, but not everyone can stick the landing. Wraight does so skillfully with a tidy bow unifying everything at the end without grasping for a 40k deus ex machina like "it was a C'tan Shard the whole time!". There are also few examples of sucessfully fleshing-out the character of a primarch. Jaghatai is handled expertly.

Bonus Points: The story was so good I only fell asleep one time due to John Bank's narration. Seriously, though. The man has no sense of dramatic gravitas. A dramatic climax, decrescendo, an expository description of setting - it's all read in the same voice, cadence, volume, etc.

Please give more books to some of these new narrators like Joe Jameson. I love the Forge of Mars series, and a large part of that is his performance. John Banks suuuuuucks.
